9/11 Attack And How It Affected Muslim Communities
Assignment
You will write a college-level analytical research paper on a subject of your choice. Choose a topic that will not only engage your reader but that you also find personally interesting; after all, you will be spending a great deal of time with it. The topic should be narrow enough that you can thoroughly research and analyze it in an essay of this length.
You will be analyzing the topic in order to divide it into a three aspects organization. This can be chronological (dividing your topic into three points in time) OR causes (dividing your topic into three causes) OR effects (dividing your topic into three effects) OR another type of three aspect organization (three types of something, for example). This three aspect (you can have up to four aspects; this would result in a longer paper, however) organization will provide the structure of your essay, as clarified in your thesis statement.
Length: 5-6 typed pages (double spaced) not including the Works Cited page (required)
Note that for a paper to be complete, it must be at least five FULL (to the bottom of the page) pages; otherwise it will be treated as incomplete.
A paper not meeting the page requirement is considered incomplete.
Format: third person (no first or second person) scholarly, neutral tone
This means no “I” or “me” or “we” or “us” or “you.” If you find yourself using “you,” a quick fix is to change it to “one.”
MLA, with parenthetical citations and Works Cited page
no more than one long/block quotation (not required)
Unsurprisingly, MLA has very specific formatting requirements for long quotations (more than four typed lines). See p. 408 in 9th edition RFW for details.
Audience: Academic. Do not assume specialized knowledge about your topic. You may need to define terms and provide a bit of background.
Note that academic writing means avoid conversational or informal word choice. This means no contractions (ex. “didn’t” would become “did not”) and no slang. When possible, aim for the more formal sounding word choice (ex. choose “films” over “movies”).
Sources: 4-6 sources. Your sources MUST be credible and college-appropriate consult the instructor if you are uncertain (.edu or .gov are safe; be wary of .com). Make sure you have links and/or downloaded copies of any sources so that I am able to consult them as I read your paper.
Organization: Your introduction should be an engaging but fairly general presentation of the topic. The last sentence, the thesis statement, should clearly express what three aspects the essay will be organized around exploring. (Do not preview those ideas prior to the thesis statement.) Each paragraphs topic sentence should indicate that its content is clearly tied to one of these aspects, all three of which will be reiterated again in the conclusion.
