Assignment 4b: Practice Learning Strategies Discussion
Introduction
Teachers exert power long before they meet the people they teach. Think about it. Before a group ever files into a room and sits down:
Someone determined the objectives and content for the curriculum the group will study and learn.
Someone selected the overall method that will be used to teach the curriculum.
Someone decided what learning strategies will be used in individual lessons.
And while curriculum designers, administrators, and school boards are sometimes involved, teachers still make many decisions.
So, how do we make instructional decisions? Do we gravitate toward teaching the way we like to teach the most or like to learn the most? Do we teach the way that makes us feel the most comfortable or the way that’s easiest (or quickest) for us? These are understandable tendencies given the hectic life most Christian leaders experience today. While you are in this course and developing your practice teaching lesson, remember that your goal is to create the instructional conditions in the classroom or Zoom-room so that people are most likely to learn and grow.
A few examples: We learned that God created our brains to be innately drawn to things that are interesting, intriguing, and relevant. How does that influence how we teach the Word? How can we make key biblical points the most vivid and the most likely to stick in long-term memory? What can we do that will get people (ideally all of them, not just a few of them) as actively engaged (thinking, doing, talking) in the learning process as possible?
There are many strategies available, all with different strengths, for different purposes. The lecture is an excellent learning strategy, but is it good for everything? Small group discussions can be very effective, but where are they most effective, and what makes them really meaningful? What strategies are most likely to connect biblical truth to hearts, emotions, and real-life outside the classroom/Zoom-room?

Be sure you’ve watched or read the material for this week, including An Anthology of Learning Strategies Download An Anthology of Learning Strategies.
After reading An Anthology of Learning Strategies, create a post and include the following:
Read John 4:5-30 (Links to an external site.).
Choose a learning strategy from An Anthology of Learning Strategies Download An Anthology of Learning Strategies or the Active Learning Strategies Download Active Learning Strategies document that you believe will be an effective tool for learning. It is helpful if you have a group in mind as you decide which strategy to implement.
Design an example of the strategy for your biblical text and lesson. Keep it brief. For example:
If you write a skit, a one-page double-spaced skit should be fine. Include 1-2 questions to debrief the skit at the end.
If you write a case study, the text of the case study should be a paragraph or two, followed by 1-2 questions.
If you develop some kind of project for small groups, write the instructions for the group and add any resources they will need.
Paste the strategy into the discussion box.
In the body of the discussion include the biblical text and your reasoning for using the strategy. How will it transform the group’s knowledge, skills, or attitudes?
Since this is a practice session, grades will be based on the effort of designing the strategy.
