My topic of choice for research is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. There have been remarkable changes over the acceptance and embrace of the LGBT community in the last two decades. Laws have stopped the discrimination against GBT relationships and society perceptions have become more tolerant. However, many LGBT community members in the US continue to be victims of hate crimes such as assault, harassment, sexual abuse and verbal assault due to their sexual orientation. A non-negligible number of human services professionals continue to express bias when dealing with LGBT members, treating them in demeaning and unethical ways (Neukrug, 2016). For instance, a research article by Mirza & Rooney (2018) in the Center for American Progress indicated that LGBTQ people continue to face disturbing rates of healthcare discrimination in form of harassment and humiliation by care providers.
My interest in this topic is to understand why LGBT people are pervasively and disproportionally vulnerable to hate and violence compared to their straight counterparts. LGBT people are nearly 4 times more likely than their straight counterparts to experience violent victimization, including sexual assault and harassment, rape and aggravated assault (Loyal, 2020). Influencing factors leading to higher violence rates among LGBT people could be cultural, religious or political and social mores and biases.
