Write an interpretive analysis, choosing your own subject matter, literary elements, or the provided topics
Write an interpretive analysis, choosing your own subject matter, literary elements, or the provided topics. Begin by reviewing the notes or thoughts you’ve written in your books. Then, you may want to brainstorm or journal to better develop your ideas. For your papers, you may (and we will cover this in class) choose to focus on a theme, characters, narration, language, structure, setting, the human condition, plot, pacing, dialogue, point-of-view, story (as an art form) aesthetic, its world, among others.
Format
Papers need to be 2 pages in length, not including a works cited page, and follow MLA format. (You can review a sample of MLA papers in supplementary material). Since this course emphasizes critical thinking, the papers will need to engage in the material and be analytical in nature.
Advice
*Write about one work specifically and then include one or two paragraphs (that relates to your topic) on the second work.
* Pick a topic you’re interested in–as always, your interest will allow for a better paper. Part of your grade is determined by your engagement and close reading of the material.
* Note: Additional help: If you believe your thesis statement is simply a statement, begin to develop by asking, “Why?” or “How?”
* Note: Your paper includes two texts we’ve read. Steer clear of summary: Remember interpretive analysis doesn’t offer a “yes” or “no” answer–or an obvious answer. Don’t compare and contrast. You’ll need to include at least one paragraph that translates your argument to the other text, as previously noted.
The first work and the main work is Macbeth and you can choose any of these topics to write about:
4. Topics are open-ended but may include any of the notes from the board. Perhaps you may want to write about suggestive evil that leads to an illusory gain, or external evil, or evil from within, or the internal spiritual struggle as manifested in the play–or what an addiction to ambition may bring, or a frenzied hate toward your fellow man. Any of these topics need to be grounded in the play, not just ruminations on what we think is evil. You could begin with a character and provide an interpretation that way. The Blue Book will help generate some ideas too. As noted in class, a look at comparing two passages may help too.
5. If so compelled, you may choose to add 2-3 pages of a creative portion to your paper. This portion would either add another character and include scenes or you could rewrite a passage and modernize it. The earlier part of the paper would have to be analysis and bridge to this second part.
Other topics: MacBeth as representatively human, relationship between character and fate, the dramatic arc and catalyst of the play. Why is MacBeth, the play, a tragic composition of evil?
Don’t forget that you can provide passages/ interpretation of language, mood, setting, pacing, monologues, characterization, and then some!
And the second work is Jesus hopped the A train and you can choose to elaborate on any of these :
Jesus Hopped the “a ” Train
1. Pick a character and argue why he or she is essential to the play?
2.Create an argument from the title.
3. Early on in the play, Valdez has a monologue–which may appear to be his only redeeming moment in the play. Re-read the monologue. What does it mean? Why is it significant to the play?
4. Lucius and Angel act as spiritual foils. Explore, Explain, and argue.
5. Redemption is a clear theme in the play. Explore, explain, and argue.
