Mintzbergs 5 organizational components are strategic apex, middle line, technostructure and support staff. An organization begins with a person who has an idea. This person forms the strategic apex, or top management. He or she hires people to do the basic work of the organization, in what can be called the operating core. As the organization grows, it acquires intermediate managers between the chief executive and the workers. These managers form the middle line. The organization may also find that it needs two kinds of staff personnel. First are the analysts who design systems concerned with the formal planning and control of the work; they form the technostructure. Second is the support staff, providing indirect services to the rest of the organizationeverything from the cafeteria and the mail room to the public relations department and the legal counsel. (Mintzberg, 1981)
The Entrepreneurial Structure can also be known as the simple component. This type of organization consists of a few managers/executives and multiple subordinates. (Caramela, 2018). I think entrepreneurial structure can be effective in small businesses because it is so simple but in large businesses it cannot be effective or efficient. . I feel Mintzberg is focusing on large businesses when he emphasizes that all 5 components are necessary. In an adhocracy structure, there is no formal structure; rather, highly qualified employees form teams to complete tasks and adjust to any industry changes. (Caramela, 2018). I think adhocracy would can be more effective in an entrepreneurial structure because it exhibits communication between team members in a business, it can accomplish a lot in a diverse environment. The highly qualified leaders of the company can still communicate and succeed to overcome any marketing or environmental changes that will allow the company to succeed.
2- Henry Mintzbergs five organizational components include entrepreneurial organization, machine organization, professional organization, divisional organization, and innovative organization. An organizational structure helps companies assign duties and responsibilities to various staff and departments (Milano, 2021). According to Mintzberg, an organizations structure emerges from the interplay of the organizations strategy, the environmental forces it experiences, and the organizational structure itself (the Mind Tools Content Team By the Mind Tools Content Team et al.).
The entrepreneurial organization is also known as the simple organization. In this category, decision-making is assigned to one, or a few, leaders. These leaders will filter down information, assignments, and goals. Micromanagement is a risk that needs to be considered for this type of organization.
Machine organization is made up of rigid roles, policies, guidelines, operating methods and reporting procedures (Milano, 2021). In this type of organization communication is clear and concise. This culture does not foster independent thinking and, as the name implies, operates in a very uniform machine-like fashion.
Professional organization allows staff to create goals and plan how to achieve them. However, long-term goals are still filtered down from executive management. Examples of these types of companies might include law firms, schools, consulting firms or innovative tech companies (Milano, 2021).
Companies that have multiple departments but share the same general functionality might find themselves in the divisional organization category. Independence is often seen in each of the multiple departments as they work to achieve overall goals for their individual departments. An example is a parent company with sub companies under them. Another example would be a store like Walmart, which is split into a variety of different departments. (Milano, 2021).
Innovative organization encourages development and, well, innovation. It is sometimes referred to as adhocracy, which is the opposite of bureaucracy (the Mind Tools Content Team By the Mind Tools Content Team et al.). Experts are used to develop new products and drive the business into the future. Team members adapt to change and bring skills and ideas that help their teammates adapt as well. One positive to this approach is the flexibility it offers. Though conflict can be experienced often due to the ambiguous nature of authority in this organization. Of these, I feel like my business falls into the professional organization. Both from my parent company and my center. Most individuals within my business have professional licenses.
