Section I: Introduction

Logically explain, with sufficient detail, how the differences in cell wall structures of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria cause them to stain differently with the Gram stain.

Section II: Materials and Methods

Describe with sufficient detail the purpose of each of the four basic steps of Gram staining. See Module 2: Gram Staining in the course material.  

Section III: Results

· Describe with sufficient detail the images provided at the “Bacterial Morphology and Staining Techniques” web link for Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli, including the color and morphology of each organism. Links to the images are also found in the “Steps to Complete Task 1” section of Unit 1, Module 2 in the course material.

· Accurately identify the shape and color of each organism from part A3.

· Accurately identify each organism from part A3 as either Gram-positive or Gram-negative.  

Section IV: Discussion

Provide a logical discussion of how the structure of gram-negative bacteria contributes to their ability to cause disease.

Section V: Sources

The submission should include in-text citations for sources that are properly quoted, paraphrased, or summarized and a reference list that accurately identifies the author, date, title, and source location as available.

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. An originality report is provided when you submit your task that can be used as a guide.
