Healthcare Management

When we identify socioeconomic disparities there are lots of evident shortcomings. For example, there’s increased hypertension, obesity, and increased rates of infant mortality to name a few health disparities. Connected inadequacies that we see within the health care system are the result of poor economic and environmental conditions (Office of Minority Health & Health Equity , 2016). Socioeconomic status can be defined by social class thus, we can think about it in terms of a pyramid where the highest income and educational levels are at the top and the lowest at the bottom. Moreover, a disparity pyramid shows that access to healthcare is better, and the quality of that healthcare also improves in relation to the health of those people at the top of the pyramid. The opposite is true for those at the bottom of the pyramid (Madara, 2021). There are several reasons as to why this might be first high-quality medical services are more likely to be in wealthy communities as opposed to poor areas or rural areas. In contrast, disease is also more likely to spread within crowded living conditions and substandard housing that does not properly protect people from the elements (Office of Minority Health & Health Equity , 2016). Another disparity by division is having a poor diet which could significantly impact a person’s health and this is especially true for those living in areas with less access to healthy foods thus, are in areas that have a lot of access to fast food but have almost no access to supermarkets or fresh produce (Madara, 2021).
Individuals with a lower social status are also more likely to take jobs that put them in dangerous environments which could lead to accidents. For example, miners work in very dangerous conditions and are also at a high risk for a condition such as black lung disease, which can result from breathing in the cold dust. These individuals simply can’t afford expensive treatments and prescriptions to take care of themselves from a poor working environment. Race can also play a large role in health care disparity because African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans tend to have higher morbidity rates or higher rates of disease and illness as well (Office of Minority Health & Health Equity , 2016). Therefore, racial differences and disparities that we see in healthcare can be elevated by the economic divide, low income, and everyday standards of health. Unfortunately, sometimes access to proper public services are reduced because of politics and local laws. Political influence can widen disparities and create disproportionate differences in the health or health outcomes within a given population.
