Portable Monitors in ICU
In a dynamic world where technology is among the main driving force, it is good to acknowledge the development of technology use in the ever-dynamic health care systems. Healthcare systems have greatly improved from the use of advanced technology. These technologies have brought changes in sustaining lives by improving quality of life, proper management and monitoring of patients with chronic conditions (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017), and improving care for patients in the intensive care units (ICU).
With the introduction of health informatics and technology, there has been a huge decrease in mortality rates and other problems that occurred more frequently in healthcare systems such as medication errors. Nurses and healthcare professionals, in general, have also fewer burdens now that with the proper knowledge and skills in the use of technology they can execute their functions more efficiently and faster than before. Nonetheless, the technological world is still changing first and the best thing to do is for nurses and healthcare professionals to keep up with the pace (Poncette et al., 2019). This is a technology project in nursing that describes the use of portable monitors in ICU as to be presented to a health institution for possible implementation.

Description of the Topic
The technology to be discussed in this project proposal is portable monitors to be implemented in the ICU. Portable monitors mostly known as a portable patient monitors are devices that can be carried with the nurse wherever they go (Weller et al., 2018). Portable monitors are effective tools for checking patients out at the right time and at the same time allowing a nurse to go on with other duties. Portable devices are safe and easy to use because they just keep the nurse updated about the patient and when there is an emergency an alarm from the device beeps to let the nurse know that there is an emergency (Weller et al., 2018). Portable devices can be adopted by hospitals, and train their patients on how to use and take care of the devices to save them on time and resources. With a portable device, a nurse can handle patients in different departments and can help doctors whenever they are needed.
ICU patients are among the critically ill patients in hospitals and they need extra care since there is a lot of monitoring to do including blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, heart rate, and rhythm among others. All these monitoring can be done effectively and efficiently with a portable device as they are made to collect and display beneficial data on a patient’s condition (Poncette et al., 2019). Progressively, such data have been collected from less critically ill patients using non-invasive sensors to show emergency conditions and record required data consistently, from patients' homes. In ICU several portable patient monitor devices can be established for such activities and more. For example, the iVita O2 Plus is one of the most used portable patient monitoring devices that provide sufficient patient data including other benefits (Leenen et al., 2020).
Description of the Project
This project will focus on the patients in the ICU and how portable monitoring devices can help improve their care. Patients in the ICU have extensive needs that include much more than medical needs. Until these patients are stable nurses and healthcare professionals have to ensure that they are making progress or they are stable daily. Introducing portable monitors means nurses will not have to be at the patient’s bedside checking their machines at all times (Leenen et al., 2020). They can monitor the patients in ICU while engaging in other activities which brings an overall benefit to a hospital. This is because other patients who need help will not be stranded at any point waiting for a nurse to finish with another patient.
Nurses need to see patients in the ICU at least after every one hour to fix anything they might need. This project focusing on portable monitors will keep nurses at rest and alarm them when a need arises. The monitors collect continuous data and the nurse stays updated as though they are in the room with the patient at all times. The benefit of portable monitors is that they are not heavy to carry around and they do not need a lot of expertise as long as they are connected to receive and show data from the patient’s room machines (Poncette et al., 2019).
Apart from keeping nurses from worrying much about their patients when they are not with them, portable monitors can also help in saving a lot of ICU patients’ lives. Without the portable monitors, nurses can sometimes be too late to save a dying patient. This is because they might not know exactly what went wrong, and by the time they check on a patient and notice a machine is not plugged in correctly or anything else is a miss the patient might be already dead or in critical conditions than before (Weller et al., 2018). Portable monitors will ensure that nurses can come to a patient’s help on time. When the alarm on the device goes on they are already on the move as they are not waiting for anyone to call out on them, and could tell what the problem might be.

A patient’s vital signs describe their condition more. When vital signs go unchecked they can cause preventable death which would be prevented if the vital signs were checked. There is always a difference between when a routine patient monitoring system is available and when it is not available (Leenen et al., 2020). Portable, wireless and wearable devices have guided the practice of nurses in several hospitals to make sure there is a routine check of hospitalized patients. These measures protect patients from injuries such as falls; protect them from preventable deaths, and also from their condition getting worse (Leenen et al., 2020).
When a patient is checked routinely there are great possibilities of progress in their condition compared to when they are not monitored routinely (Jinadatha et al., 2017). It is hard to maintain a routine check in hospitals, especially in inpatient hospitals, since there are a lot of patients and sometimes the patient-nurse ratio can be unequal. Nurses have different tasks to juggle which can make them be under pressure when some of their patients are not well monitored. Advanced medical devices provide a win-win situation to healthcare facilities since patients can receive quality care and at the same time, nurses can manage their schedules properly (Weller et al., 2018). With the advancement of these technologies, the major changes remain in proper knowledge to use these technologies efficiently to ensure that patients benefit more than they are harmed.
The healthcare system is facing an increased number of patients that need immediate attention due to the general increase in the world’s population. To manage the large numbers of patients in hospitals technology comes in handy and needs proper application. Medical professionals and engineers are working to make healthcare and biomedical technologies more developed, portable, and computerized to meet the demands and requirements of patients (Alotaibi & Federico, 2017). Modernization has become an essential component of cutting-edge life, and it has an impact on the way people live, interact and work in society. Advanced medical devices are among the major innovations that have changed the way the healthcare system is operated.
Goals and Objectives
The first goal of the project is to achieve a decreased rate of ICU patient deaths by 50% using portable monitors. The other goal is to achieve increased knowledge among nurses on the effective use of patient monitoring devices, and how to effectively use them in any unit around the hospital. The objectives of the project are to ensure effective monitoring of ICU patients by actively using portable monitors as an intervention, and observing changes in death rates before and after the use of portable monitors. Another objective is to ensure that nurses have and can show proper knowledge of using portable monitors on patients in ICU.
Significance of the Project
The introduction and use of portable monitors are to improve the quality of care for patients in the ICU and minimize any dangers they were experiencing before due to lack of proper monitoring. One of the major risks is deaths that are accompanied by poor monitoring of vital signs for patients in the ICU unit (Poncette et al., 2019). Portable devices can bring a great change to such shortcomings as they do not require a nurse to be there in person for them to check the patient’s progress. With the use of portable monitors, nurses can always be at the patient's site when there is an emergency (Weller et al., 2018). The nurse should be able to show that they are knowledgeable about various healthcare technologies and that they can notice when a device is not working properly to get them fixed to avoid inconveniences.
Conclusion
The healthcare sector is rapidly evolved toward a technology-centered system that provides effective and efficient care for patients using technology. Portable devices are devices that enable nurses to monitor patients while they are handling other tasks and be at the patient's side when they are alarmed by an emergency. Portable monitors and other devices have been used in various hospital settings as part of embracing healthcare technology. Portable monitors are an added advantage when they are used with other ICU devices to monitor patients' progress. Patients can be easily protected from unexpected outcomes by having their vital signs monitored around the clock by use of portable monitors.
