THE CULTURES WE STUDIED THIS SEMESTER. IT MUST HAVE BEEN MADE WITHIN THE HISTORICAL TIME PERIODS THAT WE STUDIED THIS SEMESTER. IF YOU ARE UNSURE, ASK ME ABOUT THE WORK OF ART THAT YOU CHOSE.

You will be expected to write 3 -5 pages. Your paper needs to address the following:

• What is the object? Begin by giving me the title, dimensions, medium and brief description. |

• Who made it? This will apply to a specific culture rather than a particular individual. (Ex: Egytpian, Sumerian, Greek, Roman, etc.) |
• 10 pts. |

• Where was it made? This will include the region in which it was made. If the object was made in a region that has a different name, include the ancient name of the region and the modern name. (Ex: Mesopotamia or Sumer is modern Iraq) |
• 10 pts. |

• When was it made? This will include the year and also the historical period. (Ex: if something was made in Ancient Greece in 400 BCE, it was made during the Classical Era.) |
• 10 pts. |

• How was it made? This will include discussion of the techniques and materials used to make the object as well as the medium. This should include visual analysis. Provide specific visual details. |
• 10 pts. |

• Why was it made? Answering this question will make up most of the paper. Why the object was made involves discussion of the belief systems of the culture, the lifestyle, the environment, and the resources available. You are expected to show a grasp of the belief system and the culture’s way of life. Briefly compare and/or contrast this object with objects that we have seen this semester. Understanding the “why” will require research. Make sure you use quotations and cite references when using someone’s else’s ideas. I am looking for your own understanding, so put these ideas in your own words. |

• Visual Analysis: Included in the discussion of How and Why the object was made, provide specific details describing the object. Specific details should be objective. For instance, red paint, black line, etc. I do not need to know that the objects are “beautiful, amazing, incredible,” so please leave adjectives out of this paper! |

• Writing must be college-level with correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. Have someone proofread paper before turning in. Use spelling/grammar check to correct mistakes. |
