Political censorship happens when a country’s government makes efforts to hide, fake, twist, or falsify information in order to achieve a particular agenda. In most cases, political censorship is done in order to protect the interests of those who are in position, to destroy those who are in opposition, to prevent destabilization and chaos, and to promote better control and authority over the people (Rogin, 2018). Throughout the recent history of our society, political censorship has existed across all countries and America is no exception. Through the years, there have already been several incidences where the American government has been accused of doing political censorship. For example, the administration of President George W. Bush during the 2000’s has been accused of political censorship about the 2003 invasion of Iraq (Rogin, 2018). Reporters who accompanied the operation were subjected to political censorship so that they would not reveal the unit’s actual location. During the Reagan administration, American journalists were not allowed to go to the island during the initial invasion of Grenada by the United States. Even way back during the American Civil War, political censorship already existed as the US Postmaster General prevented the distribution of mails that carried abolitionist pamphlets. And there are a lot more other examples that can be included here, but the point has already been made, that political censorship has existed in American society for as long as we can remember.
Of course political censorship has its pros and cons. But basically, it depends on the nature and the objective of the censorship that was done. Among its biggest disadvantage is that it can lead to great distrust. Governments that are heavily accused of political censorship in order to conceal the truth about corruption and poor governance would experience a massive loss of the people’s trust. The citizens would find it hard to trust and respect their government if the government lies about the true nature of the people in position. Censorship also allows the corrupt to remain in power and limit the ability of the opposition to remove them from power. By concealing the truth about corruption and poor governance, the public will think that their government is doing them right and this would make it hard for the opposition to gain public support against their government. Political censorship can also lead to the wrongful public persecution of people. A government can discredit the credentials of certain people, organizations, and even other governments by releasing false or modified information to the public. This is often the case when those people, organizations, and governments are not on the same side with that particular government.
But political censorship can also have great benefits. First, it is an effective tool to prevent unnecessary conflict. By manipulating information released to the public, the government can avoid unnecessary conflicts that can inhibit growth and progress. Political censorship is also a very effective tool in maintaining privacy and security for the country. There are lots of sensitive military and government information that are needed to be concealed in order to prevent them from going to the hands of terrorists. Political censorship is needed to conceal defensive strategies of the government against agents of terror and violence. Political censorship can also help in maintaining peace and order among the people. It is a very effective tool in controlling panic and fear among the general public. By withdrawing certain information, the government can make problematic situations more manageable by preventing public chaos. It would be much harder for the government to handle situations if the people have become too violent because they were given access to certain information.

Religious Censorship
Religious censorship is something that is not allowed in some religion to perform. Most of the religions don’t have common practices and due to that there is differences in believes in religions. Everyone around the world follow religion and those people who have no believe in anything consider as “Atheist”. In addition, following a believe that you are born with is the most common between people, a new born follow whatever he/she sees their parents to perform. However, these days youth changing their religion because they believe on whatever they think is correct to continue their life. Ratio of changing religion in youth is increasing since past three years.
There are many people who believes that they can live their life as they want without any restriction or anything that stops them. Most of the people say that religion values don’t let them to do such thing that they desire for that’s why they left their religion. This is quite weird thought, sometimes I also question myself that I can’t do this because of religion values. I told myself you can’t even try to drink alcohol because it prohibited in my religion. Then I asked “why”? I can’t do that. I get an answered that your faith is not strong. You don’t believe in something with a clear heart.
Furthermore, all religion teaches good moral values to live life, it is us people who create difference in our religion and change it the way we want to live. As a Muslim, I believe in one God. I do have follow five pillars of Islam to live a good life as a Muslim. I do interact with different people who performed different religions, which build curiosity in me to learn more and gain knowledge on different religion such as Christian, Jewish, Hindu etc. These religions teach people to do good deeds and stay away from bad habits. No religion, gives an order to create problems, such as killing innocent people, or hurting someone. But these it is hard to see that how people blame such religion for certain issues. I do respect all religion and values every religion teaches. Whenever I heard a shooting news in T.V I don’t say “oh that must be Muslim. Hindu or Christian” I immediately thought about those people who lost their lives in shooting. To survive in this world peacefully, I believe we need to respect everyone religion and their values don’t judge people by their appearance or their attire.

There are many jurisdictional entities in the world where media censorship is heavily enforced, for examples: North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, China, Saudi Arabia, Myanmar, Iran. There are also other entities that are looser in their censorship, for examples: Iceland, Canada, Australia, Germany, United States. (Petronzio, 2014).
Media censorship itself has many causes and effects that are related to many other factors: Economic, politic, education, religion. The act of censoring is not bad itself, but depending on the purpose, it could go both ways.
Media censorship can be a good thing when it was designed to protect undeveloped individuals from seeing and hearing things that are inappropriate to their ages. It also provides the people right to not see and hear things that are not their choices. For example, the movie “Fifty Shades of Grey” was rated PG-12 in France while it was R-rated in the U.S and U.K, and even illegal in China. (Keslassy, 2015). In this scenario, the movie was partly or fully censored for the educational cause, as many are concerned for the young teenagers’ mental development. Another example is when United States Supreme Court rule that “Offers to provide or requests to obtain child pornography are categorically excluded from the First Amendment” (Greenhouse, 2008) making it a crime to offer, solicit sexually explicit images of children, this is often referred to as Protect Act, from my perspective, this is an excellent decision and it has been working effectively as an effort to prevent child prostitution, child pornography and other abusive forms of minors.
Media censorship can also be a very effective tool to manipulate and misguide for certain individuals and organizations. For example, the North Korea government has spent decades trying to keep its people from exposing to other’s nations media. They have used it for years as an “invisible” weapon to prevent any thoughts of escaping, mistrusting or even rebelling, the result, as we all know for a fact, North Korea becomes one of the most poverty countries in the world resulting from the inability of approaching and adapting with the world’s growing technology. The less freedom the people have to explore and develop, the more negative political and economic impacts affected the very own people.
Not just North Korea, but also Cuba is one of the most censored countries media-wise, the state itself has control over the mass media, also independent journalists and bloggers are frequently going to jail for doing their jobs without the approval of the states. Many “sensitive” websites in Cuba’s internet access is blocked, thus leading to the difficulties of communication between Cuban and oversea human rights activists (Salomon, 2016).
Saudi Arabia’s media is strictly controlled by censorship from the government, throughout history, Saudi’s officials have banned public cinemas, American children’s films satellite television, Wikipedia, Google translates, LGBT supportive material, Christian material… some of these banning materials have eventually been lifted but some still remain in effect, the reason? Political and Religion influences. (Wikipedia, 2018)
Censorship has not been the hottest issue that worth debates about in the United States, but in the recent years when political, religious and educational issues became more and more sensitive, with the media outlets getting more and more divided every day, news articles and postings became a tool where a certain group of people with a certain common standpoints find something to read that will please them instead of the truth. Articles were cut, edited and even censored to protect a certain group of people’s feelings. Articles were used to spread divisiveness and political party’s interest instead of the interest of the People. Censorship plays a big role in this media epidemy. For example Silicon Valley technology giants (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google,…) had persecuted millions of accounts and call it an act of “cleaning up” the Internet, Senator Diane Feinstein (D-California) even mention to lawyers of these companies to “do something or we will” (McCaughey, 2018). Free speech is at stake whether you agree with these companies or not.
The First Amendment of the United States state that: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” And for numerous times this amendment has been violated. The very basic freedom of man is to speak his mind without getting persecuted or censored. Censorship has been actively used as a tools for dictators and brutal regimes to rise and thrive (although ironically the people in it usually starve), no man is trusted to be the “ruler”, that’s part of the reason why our founding fathers established “check and balances” as well as electoral college system. Giving some people the right to decide whether someone can voice on something or not even without violating any laws can set for bad consequences as we can see from Vietnam, China, North Korea, Cuba and most recently, Venezuela. Protect freedom of speech!
