EY 1 Option 1 Instructions: Write a 2 ½ – 3 page essay in which you analyze one (or more) of the short stories we have read in relation to the time period in which it was written or the literary movement of that time period (Puritan, Enlightenment, Antebellum Slave Narrative, for example). How is the work emblematic of the time period/literary movement? Keep in mind the characteristics of the literary movement, and consider the author’s purpose for writing. One of the best approaches with this assignment is a comparison essay in which you analyze 2 or more stories by the same author or 2 stories written by different authors. Another option is to contrast 2 works that were produced in different time periods or within different literary movements. Writing a satisfactory essay will require close (re)reading of the story/stories you select. You will need to include specific passages to support your claim, using quotations, paraphrases, and summaries as evidence. *This is not a research paper. The only source you should use is your textbook (specifically, the literary work(s) you are writing about). Option 2 Instructions: Write a 2 ½ – 3 page essay in which you analyze via contrast the works of 2 or 3 authors in relation to their purposes in writing. Your task is to show that American literature has evolved since its inception, and you will demonstrate its evolution by exploring the different purposes authors have had for writing, prompted by the historical and social settings of their time. Writing a satisfactory essay will require close (re)reading of the stories you select. You will need to include specific passages to support your claim, using quotations, paraphrases, and summaries as evidence. Your thesis statement should mention the authors you are writing about and their differing approaches. *This is not a research paper. The only source you should use is your textbook (specifically, the literary work(s) you are writing about). Additional requirements and guidelines: • Typed • Double-spaced • 1” margins • MLA heading • 12 point font, Times New Roman or Calibri • MLA in-text citations (signal phrases, parenthetical citations when quoting) • Works Cited page (MLA)
