The grass is always greener on the other side is a routine based on adopting the idea that doing something new or completely different is the solution to the current issues at hand. In some situations, this type of change may be necessary. In the case of implementing strategies to encourage organizational change, it is seen as more harmful. The grass is always greener encourages avoidance which takes away from any efforts made towards making solutions on essential areas of the company. Utilizing the grass is always greener is risky because it builds false hopes on the success of others who are usually in a completely different situation. Leaving old problems behind and attempting to start something new may also result in new issues in addition to the old ones. OR This too shall pass dysfunctional routine is the one I do see a lot at work. The book is spot on because people do ignore new initiatives, they work around them, and/or wait things out. Every time a new supervisor that comes in a department, they want to implement their process. They want to run the shop the way they think it should be running. If most of the workforce disagree, they will just do the new process only when they are being audited. If no one is looking, they will go back to their old ways of doing it. This doesn’t help because the workgroup knows that the company changes/rotate supervisors every two year. It is like a repeated cycle, trying it out just in the meantime. Organizations do need to stop this type of dysfunctional routine to continue with the new changes.
