NURS 6003 week 1Discussion: Networking Opportunities
Nurs 6003: Week 1 Discussion Walden University?s Vision, Mission, and Goals My name is Jamie Baldwin and I have been a nurse for seven years come this May. I started with a bachelors in Kinesiology because I wanted to help people manage their health through exercise, then after five years decided I wanted to manage individuals? health through a different platform. After two years at my local community college I completed my associates in nursing and started working in the intensive care unit immediately after graduation. Instead of waiting, I started working towards my bachelors in nursing online while working full-time. Once I completed my second bachelors I changed my patient demographic to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). During my four years in the NICU I have become more embedded in patient and family-centered care and have learned the fundamental importance of interdisciplinary care. This jump-started my goal of becoming a family nurse practitioner and my extensive search for the right online program. When discussing Walden?s vision, mission, and goals and its relationship to my academic and professional goals, it is important to recognize what goals I have. My goal as a scholar-practitioner is to provide the best evidence-based care possible to each individual, and the way to accomplish this is to continually research and think critically. The two statements that stuck with me are ?to provide an inquiry/action model of education that fosters research, discovery, and critical thinking and that results in professional excellence?, and ?knowledge that can be applied to the immediate solutions of critical societal challenges, thereby advancing the greater global good? (Walden University, 2020b). Nursing is a field that is constantly changing and evolving based on current research and new advances in technology. This also means that societies are continually changing and it is important to meet these demands to provide quality patient-centered care. Walden?s MSN Program Outcomes and Perspectives The deciding factor for me choosing the masters in nursing program at Walden was this specific outcome: ?Exhibit ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories/ethical principles (altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, social justice) in accordance with ethically responsible, legally accountable, specialist nursing practice? (Walden University, 2020a). Autonomy and human dignity are principles that can sometimes get lost when nurses are overworked and stressed. These are important principles that I value deeply and a goal of mine is to maintain these in my practice of being a scholarly-practitioner. Although patient autonomy has become more prominent in the field of nursing ?Respecting autonomy may, on occasion, lead to concerns regarding professional accountability and responsibility for patient welfare? (Greaney & O?Mathúna, 2017). After obtaining my masters in nursing I want to work towards more defined parameters to aid health professionals in providing care based on the patient?s wishes without fear of retaliation and to remove the health care professionals personal opinion on what the patient should do. Total Points: 100 Name:?NURS_6003_Module01_Week01_Discussion_Rubric NURS 6003 Week One Discussion My Goals and The University?s Vision, Mission, and Goals I have been a Registered Nurse at my local hospital?s Emergency Department for only a year and a half, but I was an emergency room technician for two years? prior, while attending nursing school. I always believed that working in the Emergency Department was my calling until I became pregnant and had a baby during the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic completely changed my perspective on bedside nursing. Since the pandemic began, I felt as if there was more for me to accomplish. I knew there was more that I should do as far as furthering my education, not only myself and my family, but also for my community. ?Your life is busy, but that doesn?t mean you have to sacrifice your education,? (Walden University, 2020c, para. 2). This statement on Walden University?s ?Why Walden? page really resonated with me. As a new mom of a 9-month-old baby girl, being busy now has a whole other meaning. Walden just felt like exactly what I needed to expand my knowledge and further my education. Many of my colleagues have attended Walden University and I have always heard positive feedback about the university. After conducting some research about the MSN program, and learning about their mission, goals, and need to positively effect social change, I decided to enroll. According to the Walden University College of Nursing (2020b), their mission and goal is to positively influence communities by providing diverse, scholarly, and knowledgeable practioners. A reason I chose Walden is due to the university?s vision statement? ?knowledge is worthy to the degree that it can be applied?? (Walden University, 2020a, para. 1). One may have all the knowledge in the world, but if that knowledge isn?t applied by helping others or affecting others in a positive manner, then that knowledge may not be used to its entirety. Their mission, goal and vision describe my professional and academic goals as I want to expand my knowledge and abilities in my practice to help my community and hopefully educate and motivate individuals to want to better their health. Walden?s Program Outcome Some learning outcomes listed on the Walden University website include evaluating the need of a population to promote health and prevent illness and implementing cost-effective strategies to reduce health disparities by patients (Walden University, 2020a). These are similar to the goals and outcomes I aspire to have when learning and practicing as a Family Nurse Practioner. I want to become a nurse practioner to promote health to those in my community and hope to help those before illness starts, thus, implementing a more cost-effective strategy in promoting health. I truly believe that Walden will assist me in accomplishing these goals along with my determination and ambition and one day my outcomes will be similar to those listed on the Walden University Website. ? Having spent 17 years in corrections, I applaud your decision to serve the population that many are hesitant to even talk to, let alone assist.? ?Effecting positive social change and advancing the greater global good? happens in the place where you are?right now. (Walden University, 2021)? I met an amazing array of people in the prison system.? I am sure that you are finding many people of diverse backgrounds, talents and skills that will help you grow as a person, nurse and future nurse practitioner.? Don?t be afraid to network with others outside of nursing in the prison system by joining committees within the system.? Networking is not simply a one way street.? The nurse?s network and collaborative efforts may also effect change within their immediate environment such as the ??development and implementation of an organization?s processes and procedures.?
