part 1
While companies continue to struggle with the paradigm (the new normal) of remote work, many employees find the change much easier to accept. Many companies are allowing eligible employees remote or hybrid options, but the question is what will happen when the pandemic is under control? Most employees have been enlightened to a new way of working, one with less stress and strain on their personal time and lives. This is because they have been exposed to another version of what reality can look like (this ties directly into the Plato topic discussion). The prior norm was exhausting “She often woke up at 4:30 a.m. to drive from her home in New Jersey, catch a bus into Manhattan, hop on the subway, squeeze in a workout and get to Jefferies’ trading floor by 7:30 a.m. Work dinners ran late into the night, and redeye flights to London were common†(Nguyen). The new norm has those same employees saying “I was Crazy†and “I don’t think that I could go back to it†. While employers may not be crazy about the idea, it appears they are going to have to adapt (or risk losing key players).
Nguyen, Lananh. “Wall Street Warms Up, Grudgingly, to Remote Work.†The New York Times, 11/24/2021, (www.nytimes.com/2021/11/24/business/wall-street-remote-work-banks.html?searchResultPosition=5)
part 2
A current event related to paradigm shifts is the notion of working from home. Working from home in itself has become a paradigm shift as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that is now in its third wave. The article I chose that dives into this paradigm is “The Big Question: Is the World of Work Forever Changed?†by the New York Times. At the start of the pandemic, millions of people were lucky enough to have the ability to transition to remote work as a safety precaution to mitigate the spread of the virus. Parents went from trying to balance work and home life to prioritize their career while staying present in their children’s lives, to being at home working through zoom with their children, pets, and spouses all in the background. While this improved a work-life/home-life balance easier to attain, it was certainly an adjustment for everyone. Fast forward about two years later and you see that most companies still offer the option to work from home on a constant or hybrid basis. According to the NYTimes article, eventually, almost every company is likely to offer a hybrid work option, allowing employees to work in office and at home throughout the week. This shift would never even seem imaginable prior to the pandemic, but after research was held to see the effects, as well as the pros and cons of working remotely, it has proven true that working from home is becoming a new norm and is to be expected from most companies moving forward. This is a paradigm shift. Seeing that companies survived while their employees completed their work from home, and scientific studies proving positive effects from working at home, even if only offered a day or two a week, has a positive impact on productivity and mental wellbeing of US workers.
