Where do you draw the line between self-care and self-indulgence?

In the Amplified Bible, 3 John 2 says, “Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually].” As you begin to develop your personal theology of self-care, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First of all, the focus should not be on self-gratification. Some believers resist engaging in self-care because it gives the appearance of self-indulgence. It is not to be focused on self-indulgence but rather on self-preservation for living a long and healthy life.

Second, when using the words “self-care,” we emphasize that each person (self) must take the initiative to care for him or herself because no one else is going to do it. In Luke 10:27, Jesus commands us to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” We are to take care of ourselves in the same manner as we would take care of others. This is the same principle we hear from the flight attendants before the plane takes off: “If there should be a change in cabin pressure, put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.” In reality, you are no good to anyone else if you’re not breathing.

Finally, there is no form of human self-care that provides divine rest of our soul. Only Jesus can provide such rest when we come to Him in our weary and burdened state. As Matthew 11:28 says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
