Order Instructions
Purpose: The purpose of an essay is for you to reflect on ideas raised during the semester from CS Lewis’ writings the semester and to present them in your own voice. A critical essay begins with an analysis over the lectures and readings we have done so far on life and teachings of C.S. Lewis. What have you learned from this seminal writer of the 20th Century?
Assignment:
The final will be in the format of a formal essay. Consider the role Love plays in the writings of CSL, focusing on the primary sources: Surprised by Joy, The Four Loves and Til We Have Faces or from any other of his writings including the Narnian Chronicles.
Consider the following topics on love and choose one:
Lewis on eros and happiness
Lewis on friendship — where do we see it in his own life?
Lewis on spiritual longing / desire as a form of love
Lewis on Christian marriage
Lewis on love, worship, and when it becomes idolatry
Lewis on gender and love — can men and women be friends?
Lewis on the role of love in suffering
Lewis on the role love plays in human transformation
A critical essay begins with an analysis over the lectures and readings we have done so far on life and teachings of C.S. Lewis. You will briefly summarize the works, then move into analysis. “Critical” is both positive and negative – it conveys an attitude of “detached evaluation.”
The essay will contain:
Thesis of argument (10%)
Summary of Lewis’ point of view (include textual support from Lewis’ works to argue your point) (35%)
Critical evaluation: assess the logical consistency of Lewis’ appraisal (include textual support from Lewis’ works to argue your point)(35%)
Personal reflection on Lewis’ arguments (10%)
Word Count: 900-1200
MLA Style / Works Cited Page. Minimum of 4 sources (you may include any Morgan Lecture notes as a source). While you may quote from the Bible, quotations from the Bible do not comprise one of your CSL sources. MLA in-text citations do not need to have page numbers as many of you are using digital books, but do need the chapter or the letter that is being used. Example: “Lovers are normally are face to face, absorbed in each other; Friends, side by side, absorbed in some common interest” (Four Loves, Ch. 4).
