Why is this issue something we should be concerned about? Discuss the scope of the problem
To submit your paper: Upload to the “Assignments” tab of your course homepage. (See menu on the left side of the homepage and click on “Assignments” to upload. Please upload your paper in Word format.)
In this paper, you are to examine question related to gender and crime. This is a policy analysis which means that you should focus on a crime-related problem and suggest a solution. Because of the content of this class, a gender analysis should be a significant aspect of the paper. The policy portion can involve passing a statute, designing a prevention or intervention program, or making broader suggestions for social change.
Your research question has to be logically related to the solution you present through empirical research. In other words, explain the source of the problem, cite some studies that are relevant, and then offer a solution that deals with the source(s) of the problem. Note that you’ll need to support your ideas with appropriate sources.
Begin by reviewing the literature and research on your selected topic. You will need to read and cite a minimum of six academic articles and/or books (book chapters). “Academic articles” means peer-reviewed journal articles. Use other materials (see additional acceptable sources) as desired. You can use books or articles from this course as they provide high-quality information. In fact, I encourage you to use these sources, many of which offer policy perspectives.
Additional acceptable sources also include government publications, professional journals in sociology, criminology, psychology, law, or corrections. Newspaper articles from New York Times are allowed. Web sources from official government or recognized justice organizations are allowed. In fact, there are numerous criminal justice web sites. Check out sites for The Urban Institute and similar foundations that do policy-based research on criminal justice.
Paper Instructions
Based on what you’ve read and your analysis of it, you’ll need to accomplish the following points in your paper. (It’s a good idea to keep these points in mind before starting your reading to ensure that you are on the right track in finding materials.) You will be graded on how well you follow this format, the quality of your sources, and the structure and organization of your paper.
1. Introduction: Why is this issue something we should be concerned about? Discuss the scope of the problem.
This section can include a discussion of historical perspectives, international comparisons, statistical descriptions of the problem, political environment that impacts the situation, and what has been tried and has failed.
2. Thesis (actually part of the introduction). This is an arguable statement that lays out what you intend to write about and the position that you are taking.
3. Body of the paper – discuss the materials you’ve read about the topic. Outline your arguments; sub-headings are very helpful in organizing your material.
4. Conclusion: Summarize by restating the major findings you’ve discussed. Offer policy suggestions in the conclusion that follow from the material you’ve presented.
5. List of references, cited in ASA or other recognized reference style. The Library subscribes to RefWorks a bibliographic program. I suggest that you check this out as it’s a great way to store your sources and automatically create a bibliography for your papers.
