Students will search for books, articles, database items, and specific locations and resources in the Chesnutt Library to prepare for other projects and practice citing sources in APA 6th format. They will identify and locate scholarly and popular articles. They will create an annotated bibliography of at least 10 resources including two of each of the following: scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles, books and documents, which they can use later for industry, market and/or financing assignments. Resources for this assignment will include but not be limited to: Chesnutt Library books, ABI Inform Complete, JStor, EconLit, Business Abstracts, Business Source Complete, Entrepreneurial Studies Source, EbscoHost, World Cat, the United States Census, Google Scholar, Mergent Online, Lexis-Nexis, ProQuest Entrepreneurship, the APA 6th edition manual, and other sources identified by students.
This assignment’s primary objective is for students to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use the needed information and includes the following ACRL Standards 1 through 5: The information literate student determines the nature and extent of the information needed; accesses needed information effectively and efficiently; evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system; uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose, and understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally. The specific performance indicators and outcomes include:
• Standard 1, Performance Indicator 1, Outcomes a & b: Defines & articulates the need for information by conferring with the instructor, participating in class and other discussions to determine the information needed. Then, identifies key concepts and terms that describe the information needed.
• Standard 2, Performance Indicator 5, Outcomes c & d: Differentiates between the types of sources cited and understand the elements and correct syntax of a citation for a wide range of resources. Records all pertinent citation information for future reference.
• Standard 3, Performance Indicator 1, Outcomes a & b: Reads the text and selects main ideas. The, restates textual concepts in his/her own words and selects data accurately.
• Standard 4, Performance Indicator 3, Outcome d: Communicates clearly and with a style that supports the purposes of the intended audience.
• Standard 5, Performance Indicator 3, Outcome a: Selects an appropriate documentation style (APA 6th) and uses it consistently to cite sources.
Some assessment measures include: were at least 10 of types of items found; has the bibliography been annotated in APA 6th style, and are the references cited correctly? Did the books come from a particular viewpoint or position, which one? What resources were used in the journals and books by their authors? Do the annotations provide a description of the book, article or document? Do they provide a critical analysis of the source such as their relevancy, accuracy and worthiness of the data?
Locate each of the following items using your information literacy skills. For each item, regardless of type, create a citation in APA 6th format and write a brief paragraph (100 words maximum) that summarizes the resource and identifies how it might be useful to you as you study social entrepreneurship. Put the citations into proper order and formatting according to APA format. See https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/614/03/ for further information regarding Annotated Bibliographies. The skills used for this exercise will be needed throughout this course and the type of information that you acquire is used later in the course.
1) Find a full-text version of “The Social-Entrepreneurship Advantage: An Experimental Study of Social Entrepreneurship and Perceptions of Nonprofit Effectiveness” by Fredrik O. Andersson and William Self using ABI Inform Complete or EbscoHost and cite it. You should be able to find an abstract or summary of the article.
2) Find and cite an article (not peer reviewed) using Chesnutt Library databases that identifies a social entrepreneur. Describe five (5) facts about this social entrepreneur. Note the database(s) accessed in your annotation. This can be done via the FSU website.
3) Find and cite a book about social impact investing OR microfinance that is NOT a textbook. Use the Chesnutt Library online catalog. If it is not in the Chestnutt Library collection, use World Cat to locate it in another library. Note the name of the library where it is located in your annotation. This can be done via the FSU website.
4) Find and cite a peer-reviewed/journal article about Kiva using EbscoHost with only peer reviewed articles and full text defined in the search criteria (advanced search). Provide five (5) facts about Kiva.
5) Search for and visit the website for Ashoka. (Use a public search engine such as Google or Bing.) What is Ashoka? What types of information are available to the public? What information, if any, is restricted?
Remember to cite all of your sources in APA 6th style. You may answer each question and provide a Reference page at the end. Or, you may put each citation with each set of comments to create an annotated bibliography.
