Interview summary On December 12, 2020, I took advantage of the opportunity to interview the nurse manager on a medical-surgical unit of a hospital in New York City. This hospital is a private two hundred and fifty beds facility. Since the hospital was opened in 1955, it has been independently operated. The role of the nurse manager consisted of ensuring staff education and ongoing staff development. Her goals included patient satisfaction while upholding the processes and values of the organization. The nurse managers responsibilities included the development of objectives and goals, maintaining open communication among team members, maintaining fiscal accountability for resources, and collaborating with staff for problem-solving. It was expressed during the interview that the hospitals financial status over the past year has been less than desirable. She expressed that the hospital has been facing financial challenges due to reduced reimbursement and a lower volume in the rate of admission. As a result, the financial impact of every decision she makes is taken into consideration. While she stated concerns about the financial standing of the hospital, it was also expressed that all managers shared the same concerns. Some strategies have been implemented to decrease cost, such as daily reporting of benchmark productivity and avoiding filling vacant positions. While the effort is in effect, the hope exists managers will comply to make the effort a success. However, not everyone complies or is held accountable. The nurse manager expressed that the issue of accountability is not being emphasized enough. She also highlighted that there is a lack of communication with staff to keep them in the loop about the financial situation. This strategy would facilitate the opportunity to receive input from them. She pointed out that while some managers engaged in collaboration, as an entire organization, it is clear that there is a gap. She referred to her previous experience at her former place of employment, which was of a similar size, stating that interdisciplinary collaboration was well functioning. She identified that the system at her former job worked well because clear guidelines were in place, stakeholders were involved, roles were assigned, and everyone was aware of their role. She emphasized that collaboration was encouraged and embraced, which motivated everyone to unite. . Issue Identification In this interview, the identified issue is that there is a need for the organization to incorporate collaboration as a whole. This effort is necessary to aid in cost reduction, directing the organization towards a stronger financial standing. Different perspectives can be gathered by bringing everyone together. Change Theories That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution When issues arise, the use of change theory could facilitate interdisciplinary solutions. Kurt Lewins Change Model is a beneficial model that could be used in this situation. This model involves the sharing of knowledge, mainly from employees to leadership. This could work by knowledge sharing by both leadership and frontline staff with the administration. This model would allow the involvement of the entire organization. In this type of leadership style, the leaders coordinate with employees, share their knowledge, give opportunities in making decisions at the organizational level (Hussain, Akram, Haider, Hussain, & Ali, 2018). Because this model highlights the involvement of the entire organization, I believe it is relevant in this situation. By using a broader scope of ideas, it is more beneficial than just including a fraction of the team. Leadership Strategies That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution To achieve the goal of cost-saving, clear and concise communication can be used to enhance engagement when working together. Maintaining a high standard, which includes accountability, can be a significant factor in the organizations cost-saving effort. It is also an important additive to implement goals on a standardized level to maintain the core values of the organization. Another strategy is an ongoing evaluation, which leaves room for new ideas. Cost-saving strategies may also involve Implementing a reward system by showing recognition to staff for positive contributions to the goal of the organization. According to Seitovirta, VehvilinenJulkunen, Mitronen, De Gieter & Kvist (2017), studies have found significant associations between nurses rewards and both their commitment and job satisfaction. Each of these strategies appears to be ideal methods of effective cost saving in this organization. At the organization level, team effort helps to solve various problems of the organization, such as conflict, unclear roles, lack of innovation in solving problems, which all contribute to the upsurge of the performance of the organization (Potnuru, Sahoo & Sharma, 2019). Collaboration Approaches for Interdisciplinary Teams. I have noted that the transformational leadership approach might be the most relevant approach for interdisciplinary team building in this organization. This approach works positively by developing, empowering, inspiring, and motivating team members. To enhance the improvement of the organization, the transformational leader can capitalize on the potential of each team member to build on staff development. According to Anderson & Sun (2017), transformational leadership is characterized by leaders who articulate an inspirational vision of a desirable future that motivates followers and devote exceptional effort to the causes advocated by the leader
