Many opponents of the death penalty claim that there is a racial and economic bias in how the death penalty is applied. Some deny that this is factually true, but many who support the death penalty concede that it is true but argue that justice ( the guilty being appropriately punished) is more important that the equal distribution of any punishment. In other words, as long as those who actually get the death penalty are truly guilty, it does not matter that others who also deserve the death penalty do not get the same punishment ( Van den Hagg). I take this argument to be something like an individual getting a speeding ticket when other drivers who were speeding got away. The argument seems to be that as long as you were speeding, it is just to give you a ticket, even if others who were speeding did not get one. What do you think about this response to the unequal distribution argument?
