HOMOEOPATHIC SYSTEM OF MEDICINE An Introduction The homoeopathic system of medicine is one of the finest systems of cure available to mankind. It achieves in totality the ideal laid down by its originator, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann: “The highest ideal of cure is rapid, gentle and permanent restoration of the health, or removal and annihilation of the disease in its whole extent, in the shortest, most reliable, and most harmless way, on easily comprehensible principles.” The harmlessness of the homoeopathic system cannot be over- emphasized in the twentieth century when antibiotics, cortisones and scores of other wonder drugs, on account of indiscriminate use cause more problems than they cure. In homoeopathy, not a single drug is used without knowing its effect on healthy human beings. Hence there is no shooting in the dark. The system operates, by and large, without laboratory tests and other expensive means of diagnosis which are being employed even when not absolutely necessary and that too, unfortunately, on patients who can hardly afford the expense. Cost wise, there is no medical system in the world which is as inexpensive as homoeopathy. No patient who requires a speedy cure without side effects can ignore homoeopathy; no doctor who has nothing but the good of his patient at heart can overlook the utility and effectiveness of homoeopathy and no Government which has to balance its budget can afford not to use homoeopathy in hospitals and other institutions run for the health and care of the sick and thus achieve astronomical economies in its expenditure on health care. The development of the homoeopathic system of medicine makes a fascinating story. Dr. Samuel Christian Friedrich Hahnemann (born: April 11, 1755; died: July 2, 1843), a German physician was practicing as an allopath when he formulated the principles of homoeopathy. He was totally dissatisfied with the prevalent modes of medical diagnosis and treatment. He was agitated because drugs were used on patients without anyone understanding their true effect on the human mind and body. He found the current methods of bloodletting of patients to cure them, of treatment of mental patients, of treatment of chronic diseases unacceptable and irrational. “He recognized the insufficiency of medical science and of the therapeutic methods of those days, which he denounced with undaunted energy and eloquence of speech like the old prophets”, writes Dr. Richard Haehl, a biographer of Dr. Hahnemann. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann was a sincere seeker of truth. He was not ready to believe in the existent theorie
