This paper must be a minimum of 4 double spaced pages (1000 words), and be graded out of 100 points then will be weighted to 15% of your final grade. Your grading rubric for the paper is as follows:

* Focus and cohesion: 0-25 points
Below are a series of questions about the original cultures of the Caribbean. Be sure to answer most of the questions fully and completely. You should include at least THREE direct references or citations to scholarly works to support your paper. You can use the readings assigned for class if you like, and you may also use other scholarly texts if you would like to (though it’s not required). You must also include in-text citations and a Works Cited page. The paper will be submitted directly through Blackboard. Answer the following questions in both Parts A and B.
A. Describe indigenous culture in the Caribbean before the Europeans arrived. Include a description of their religious beliefs, mythology, cultural practices, and any other information you find interesting. You may reference our class handout with the Taino myths for this section if you like. I also suggest using Academic OneFile — a Library database — and using search terms such as “Taino” and “history” and “culture” to find full text, peer reviewed articles that examine Taino cultural practices.
B. Describe what is meant by the term “cultural contact,” in your own words. How did the arrival of European explorers, conquerers, and colonists permanently change social and cultural life in the Caribbean? What are some controversies about Columbus as an hisotrical figure? For this section, I suggest referring to the following sources:
