You need to create your definition by giving it boundaries; using specifics to differentiate this idea from others that might get confused with it. You want your writing to fully explain the particular way that you see the subject you are writing about.
By using other methods (example, compare/contrast, cause/effect) you will describe your idea in detail and you will show the reader your definition of it. No matter what other methods you use, ultimately you need to give an example of your definition.
Keep in mind that when describing an idea, you want to use as many specific details as possible, as well as words that have clear meanings and are strong enough to convey the image you are trying to invoke in the reader.
