To conduct image research for the purposes of exploring?mood?and?elements of design?(line, shape, texture, color, compositio
Objective:
To conduct image research for the purposes of exploring mood and elements of design (line, shape, texture, color, composition),
To apply research to formulation of a basic visual concept or metaphor for a fairy tale.
Discussion Prompt: Before tackling this Activity, be sure to take a look at Power Point Lecture #16 ~ The Visual Image. In this lecture I go over visual metaphor in more detail and take you through some examples of how metaphor can impact design. Remember, visual metaphor helps to unify the visual world of the play. This assignment is a beginning visual research exercise that could be applied more specifically if one were completing the Final Project in Design (not a project for Spring 2020). This initial exercise borrows from a genre of literature that invites strong imagery. Hopefully, you can have a little fun.
Choose a children’s fairly tale for your work that is fun for you. Some good options are:
Rumplestiltskin
Little Red Riding Hood
Rapunzel
Cinderella
Jack in the Beanstalk
Hansel and Gretel
Goldilocks
Sleeping Beauty
The Ugly Duckling
Formulate a strong visual or aural (sound) metaphor for the tale. For example, I might say that my production of Cinderella is a Steampunk Fantasy. That image conveys both visual (scenery, lights, costumes) and aural (sound) possibilities for design. Your metaphor might relate to what you view as the spine of the story, but this is not a requirement. Remember, the visual / aural metaphor is meant to inform the “look” or the sound of the theatre world. It isn’t a literary metaphor.
Once you have a working metaphor, generate a list of adjectives that describe the look, feel and even sounds of this world. Let the adjectives be visually evocative.
Find a minimum of 8 images OR sounds that capture some of these descriptive adjectives that when arranged in a collage or in sound clips, give a sense of your world as rooted in the metaphor. I am not looking for text in your collage, only images. I am also not looking for plot explanation.
Create and Post your collage or sound clips using the attachment feature. You could use Lino (but make it accessible). You could use magazines and create a hard copy of your collage and then scan it and post it as an attachment. I would like you to start thinking about how to arrange visual items in this assignment. In my example below I’ve used Lino. In the body of your written work provide the name of the Fairy Tale, your working adjective list and The Visual Metaphor and provide a single paragraph description of the world you have depicted in your collage. I do not want a plot description, I want you to describe the visual or sound world.
