Expectations :
Students will participate in direct patient care with the intention of providing patient teaching/education. Patient/Family education is a significant part of a nurse’s job. Education empowers patients to improve their health status. Patient education is important for building patient’s knowledge, understanding, and preparedness for self-management. When patients are involved in their care, they are more likely to engage in interventions that may increase their chances for a better outcome. Patient education needs to be comprehensive and easily understood. Nurses must understand that greater than 50% of Americans are health care illiterate. This has nothing to do with their ability to read and write; but rather their inability to understand health care information and what they need to do with that information.
With the assistance of a preceptor, students will identify a patient that requires education related to their health.
Patient training/education can include but is not limited to the following:
• Discharge Instructions
• Diabetic Education
• Pre-op Instructions
• Post-op Instructions
• New medication (must include teach-back on side effects)
• New Diagnosis (ex. Heart attack, cancer, surgical procedure, etc.)
• Training on new equipment
2. At the conclusion of the clinical experience, the student will submit a written paper of 5-10 pages in length (utilizing APA format), that describes the experience, how the stated objectives have been achieved, and identify how the experience impacted the student’s nursing educational journey. This paper is due by the end of the fifth week of the Transition course. This paper should also address salient learning, observations and conclusions.
