What’s the best strategy to develop a nursing portfolio?
Developing a nursing portfolio is important for adding visibility and credibility to one’s work. By updating resumes and keeping track of one’s accomplishments and professional successes, one can show areas of strength in their career or areas that need improvement/more experience. A nursing portfolio provides evidence of how an individual has developed both personally and professionally, showcasing for past accomplishments and enabling for future career and development planning (Casey & Egan, 2010). To include academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals, I can utilize multiple strategies.
First, I can develop an ePortfolio online. Creating an ePortfolio can give possible employers an idea of who I am and what professional experience I have. According to Hannans & Olivo, an ePortfolio should include your basic information, a professionally taken photograph, an updated resume with references, volunteer experiences, clinical experiences if a student, information about professional clinical roles, and experiences that demonstrate leadership, communication skills, and teamwork (2017). Hannans & Olivo’s article also mentioned that the traditional method of submitting resumes for jobs is somewhat outdated and that ePortfolios may soon be required with every job application, so having an ePortfolio is staying ahead of the game. EPortfolios are a great resource to see what academic activities and accomplishments have been made and what needs to occur to meet professional development goals. Another strategy is to have a LinkedIn profile or a social media platform like Facebook that shows your academic achievements, career experiences and successes, and online connections. LinkedIn is a great way to connect with possible future employers and to see references/people you may know. LinkedIn profiles have the ability to showcase all education, professional and clinical experiences, certifications, and career goals, which is an easy layout/presentation to follow.
The strategies listed above are congruent with Walden University’s views on social change. Positive social change is one of the main commitments of Walden University’s missions to make a difference in the world. Walden University encourages their students to use the knowledge they gained from their education for the greater good. By keeping track of one’s professional success and always creating new goals and completing continuing education courses, nurses can make a difference to their patients by staying up to date and always learning new things to apply in their jobs. Through positive social change or “applying ideas to promote the development of individuals, communities, and organizations, as well as society as a whole”, nurses can change lives (Walden University, 2021). Eportfolios and online groups are an excellent method for tracking progress and finding room for improvement.
