Assignment 4d: Short Term Counseling Paper #1
Client: Thomas Wimbledon
Mr. Wimbledon appeared for his first counseling session approximately 15 minutes early. He reported to his counselor that he was 29 years old, single, never married, and had never dated. He was approximately 5’11” tall, weighed 150 pounds, exercised daily, and reported that he was in excellent health. He was the only child of an evangelical pastor (62 years old) and a mother (57) who was a second grade school teacher in a Christian grade school.
As a child he was somewhat of a loner but had a small group of good friends with whom he was quite close. A month before presenting for counseling, he had experienced an automobile accident in which he suffered a concussion resulting in his physician recommending he refrain from playing any sports for a period of at least three months. Subsequent to the head injury, he experienced severe headaches, but they seem to be improving.
When the counselor asked Mr. Wimbledon what he wanted to work on in counseling, he said that while he wanted to date and eventually to get married, when he thinks about approaching a young lady, he gets very nervous, confused, perspires heavily, feels sick at his stomach, his hands start shaking, and he gets a headache. Sometimes he works up the courage to approach the young lady, but when he tries to speak he begins stuttering, stumbling over his words, and his face becomes hot and turns quite red. When that happens, he just excuses himself and walks away.
The counselor asked when the last time this happened, he Thomas said that it had happened the day before he called to make the counseling appointment. He wanted to approach a young lady he had known for several years just to go out for dinner and perhaps a movie. For several days he rehearsed what he would say to her, but when it came to ask her out, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. He felt just too anxious. Then he became angry with himself saying to himself, “I am such a loser. My life is horrible, and I am going to end up all alone. I shouldn’t be having this problem with women after all these years.”
Assume that you are the counselor and that the model you use is REBT.
Assignment: Write a paper in which you clearly and logically divide the paper into sections so I can easily determine your answer to each point below about which I ask. Give adequate detail to fully and logically justify your position. I do not care about the length of the paper, but you should make sure that you answer every point fully, do not repeat yourself, do not have a flowery introductory paragraph in which you announce what you are covering, and do not have a conclusion that restates the points of the paper. Jump into the issue, fully develop your points, and end with a major insightful conclusion is that is specific, not vague and repetitive. The paper must be in fully APA format. Discuss your answers to the following points:
What is the client’s critical activating event in this session?
Discuss in detail why the critical activating event is not the fact that Thomas is an only child?
In the last paragraph, what are the two primary dysfunctional emotions experienced by Mr. Wimbledon?
Which is the primary emotion and which is the secondary emotion?
What is one inference associated with Mr. Wimbledon’s anger?
What are the three dysfunctional/unhelpful beliefs causing Mr. Wimbledon’s anger?
Label each dysfunctional/unhelpful belief associated with the anger and the type of dysfunctional/unhelpful belief each is, i.e., demandingness, frustration intolerance, etc.
