Throughout the course of the semester, you will write 5
response essays that each engage one academic article that we read for class 
These essays will be rigorously graded, but you have the opportunity to re-write each essay as
many times as you wish, until you achieve the grade you desire. If you feel confused about how
to revise an essay, please schedule a time to meet with me and we can talk through it.
Additionally, about half-way through the semester, we will have an in-class writing workshop on
revision. Each re-write is due within one week of receiving your prior essays grade back.
In these response papers you should:
Have a clear intro, body, and conclusion
Have a clear and insightful thesis
Clearly, specifically, and briefly summarize the text
Highlight one specific phenomenon, concept, idea, or question from the text that you find
compelling, and make an argument for or against its relevance, application, and/or ability
to describe existing social conditions
Papers should be at least one full page, but no more than two pages
