support children who are experiencing stress
Reflection Question:
How do we best support children who are experiencing stress? Choose one of the groups from this week’s lecture and build out the content of a resource that you think would best support them in their lives. First describe what this resource would be (e.g., legal aid, a workshop, a center focused on their issues). Next, describe key components/elements to your resource and why they are critical. When considering your resource how would you utilize the assets of these children/families to strengthen your resource? Use information from at least one of the course readings to justify your response. Finally, describe one other group you would include in this week’s lecture who was not discussed covered in the content and why you think we should consider this a group of children under stress (e.g., sex-trafficked survivors, children held in immigration detention facilities, drug-addicted youth).

1. ” Some ways on how we best support children who are experiencing stress are helping them with physical activities so their mind and body can relax, listening to the child when they are speaking up, having an amazing social support from family and friends, and more. Another way is focusing on solutions rather than problems (Ravisha Mathur, lecture, 11/04/2021). When people tend to focus on the solutions, they tend to become more positive and less stressed. Focusing on the problems can lead to having an excessive amount of stress.
A resource that best supports children in their lives can be mental health services for children to help with their development [brain]. Some key components are having certain workshops to help children overcome their stress. By doing so, these mental health non-profits can have children participate in physical activities, talk to a therapist/ counselor, and using the resources from the community that this non-profit offers. COVID has tremendously affected the brain development of children, which then led to having stress. According to Benner & Mistry (2020), developmental perspectives and life-span theories are useful in understanding the pandemic.
Another group that I would include in this week’s lecture are children held in immigration detention facilities or those who are separated from their families. I would include these children because they do not have the proper social support from anyone. They do not have resources at all to good food, beds, proper clothes, and more. This can lead to stress. Having stress can lead to poor mental health, such as: depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and more. Being separated from a family can definitely cause poor mental health and these children are in need of proper support. “
2. “I think that the best way to support children who are experiencing stress is to allow them to express how they feel to someone who can listen to them and guide them. One group from this week’s lecture is children who have been impacted by COVID-19 and the Pandemic. A resource that would be benificial for this group woud be a an app/website that allows children to see and talk to other children who are impacted by the pandemic. It would be similar to study apps that students use to study together exept with a focus on chatting with someone and being able to socialize through the internet. This resource would be beneficial for young children who are experiencing loneliness or other effects of the pandemic because thye may have lost certain sources of socialization and support such as parents or school friends but they can gain access to other potential sources of socialization and support from this resource which can benefit children (Benner & Mistry, 2020). This resource would be a great way for lonely or bored children to just talk and relax through the internet and a way to utilize possible assets of families is to include a technology linking feature. For example, two children chatting with each other could connect to a game console and play with each other through the app or possibly share music with each other through other apps such as Spotify. Another group that I would include is children who are addicted to drugs. I think that we should consider this group of children under stress because they may be doing drugs in order to combat stress coming from different sources which would be somewhat difficult to pinpoint but can be done over time. Drug use among teens seem to be getting more and more frequent and it would be a nice initiative to tackle any problems that young teenage drug abusers may have that contributes to their drug use. “
