Introduction

 

Welcome back to Sound Lab! For this assignment you will again use Praat, this time for two different mini-projects:

(1) Comparing formant patterns for different English vowels, as produced separately by a female speaker and a male speaker;

(2) Exploring the Source-Filter Theory by creating artificial vowels by manipulating purely acoustic signals, no actual human voices involved!

 

Here’s a summary of what you will need to do:

 

1. If you have not previously done so, install Praat on a sound-enabled computer of your own, or one that you have regular access to. It will be most convenient to install Praat on a laptop that you can bring to class, but you can certainly do all of these tasks on a desktop computer at home. If you do not have access to a computer, please let me know so we can make alternate arrangements.

 

Note: Praat runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines, but there is NOT a tablet (e.g., iPad), Chrome book or smartphone version.

 

2. Follow all directions below carefully. Record your responses on the answer sheet provided as the last page in this document. Turn in only the answer sheet (i.e. the last two pages of this document).

 

3. You may discuss the lab and questions with your classmates, but make sure your final document reflects your own answers in your own words.
