When working towards goals, one major concept to consider is reinforcement, which the textbook Psychology in Your Life defines as: “The additional or removal of a stimulus to increase the probability that a behavior will be repeated” (Grison and Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 214). Negative reinforcement is basically rewarding a behavior by removing something bad, or in my case, painful. Within my SMART Goal, I experienced negative reinforcement with stiffness and soreness in my shoulder. The more I do physicaltherapy, the less my shoulder feels stiff and sore. This motivates me to get started when I don’t feel like doing my physical therapy exercises.
