There are two kinds of argumentative thesis statements:
1. A position statement
2. A problem/solution statement
POSITION STATEMENT
A position thesis statement takes a claim of policy position on a controversial issue.
Example Position Thesis
Topic: Euthanasia
Thesis: In America, terminally ill patients should be allowed the option of physician assisted euthanasia, only if they agree to the act on their own volition; the assisting physician shouldn’t be held accountable morally or politically.
PROBLEM/SOLUTION STATEMENT
A problem/solution essay must first identify the problem and then present a claim of policy that offers a solution to the problem.
Example Problem/Solution Thesis
Topic: Alcoholism & Drug Addiction
Thesis: Drug and alcohol addiction has plagued the United States for well over a century, with the number of known addicts steadily increasing with every year; in order to combat this growing issue, we must supply more aid to recovering addicts and put an end to what caused the addiction to begin.
Please submit only your Topic and your Thesis. The topic is the large subject and the Thesis is your focused claim of policy.
