In the Heights movie by Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda- three source annotations
- First, give the "title," author, and main point of the source.
- Then, summarize it.
- Evaluate your source for its goal/biases and reliability.
- Lastly, describe how you plan to use it in your essay.
The Prompt:
Your job for this assignment is to write an annotated bibliography. It is a list, in MLA style, of sources used in a particular essay. Each citation is followed by a paragraph (the annotation) that includes a brief summary of that source’s main points, an assessment of the source, and how the source relates to the essay’s topic.
Criteria:
● Include a working thesis statement for the essay before listing your citations.
● Your bibliography must include 5 sources total that you plan on using in your research paper.
o The play does NOT count as a source but one source should be directly about the play; for example, you might find a literary analysis, a review, interview with the author, or other article that discusses themes in the play.
o The other sources should be about the problem posed in the play (look especially for ones that suggest solutions to this problem).
o Look for sources in the library catalog, or databases such as Gale Literary Sources, EBSCO databases, Academic Search Complete, Opposing Viewpoints, JSTOR, or the MLA International Bibliography with Full Text on the ELAC library website.
● Include a creative working title that you plan to use for your research paper.
● Your annotations must be between 150 and 250 words long. You must do three things in each annotation:
o Summarize the main points of the source. (Stick to the author’s main points. Break the source down into sections to help you figure them out.)
o Assess the source. Here, reflect on the source’s:
▪ Goal (Is the source objective/neutral or heavily trying to influence its readers to believe something? What is the source trying to do? Educate? Argue? Inform? Convince? Find a strong verb to help you explain. You may also consider what else the author could have added to or left out of their argument in this section).
▪ Reliability (How do you know the author is reputable? What are their credentials and/or experience? How do you know the publication - not the database – is reputable? Who is their audience? Is it peer-reviewed? If not, why is it still reliable? Be sure to include information on BOTH the author and publication. Do a google search on each if you have to. If you cannot find information about the author, acknowledge this).
o Reflect specifically on the usefulness of the source to your paper. (How will you use this source in your essay? What is valuable about it for your argument? Is there a certain section of your essay where you think this source might be most useful?)
● Your citations must follow MLA style, including using hanging indent, placing items in the correct order. It is your job to use the OWL at Purdue MLA guide to figure out how to format each citation. Remember, though, that many library databases format citations for you. You can just copy and paste them (but do verify that they are correct by comparing them with models in the MLA guide).
● Your citations/annotations should be listed in alphabetical order by the last name of the author or, if there is no author, the first main word in the title (NOT “the,” “a,” or “an”).
