Field site Response
Watch the 15 minute video below. As before, please imagine that you are a student teacher visiting this preschool classroom. On the day you are ‘visiting’ here, you will be observing at least 3 different activities in the classroomopportunities where you sit down at the children’s level and join them in their play and ‘language learning’ explorations.
***Below is the video (about 15 minutes long) which includes an introduction by a Bank Street professor as well as brief periods of ‘processing’/analyzing with a panel of student teachers. Please watch this video in its entirety. Take notes on what you see as well as on the various ideas that the student teachers share.–Feel free to agree/disagree with your fellow student teachers here! (Feel free to use their names.)

Select 3 of the activities in this video, and Please answer ALL of the following questions:
1.–Write exactly what you are observing. Example: What I first observed on this second student teaching day was a child engaged in solitary play. What I noticed was…. Some of her language consisted of…. Her bodily language suggested… (OPTIONAL: After awhile, I joined her and then this is what happened…..)
2.–Interaction with peers or other adults: In each activity that you observe, what did you notice about how the child (or children) interacted (played/communicated) with their peers or the adults? Were there any opportunities for fostering increased social emotional learning or language in the activity you observed? Be specific. If possible, jot down and reflect on certain conversations between children/children and adults/or ‘self-talk’ during a play scenario.
-3.-Did you think the materials provided in this classroom center (where the activity was happening) encouraged learning, and how so? Was oral language being fostered, and if so, how exactly?
4.–How might you have entered into the activity to foster more engagement or deeper learning? What might you have asked the child? Could you have initiated a writing or drawing activity that might foster greater language and literacy?
5.–Did you like/agree with an idea that one of the student teachers shared at the end of each video segment. Please share ONE IDEA form one of the Bank Street student teachers that jumped out for you.
—In your final 1-2 paragraphs of this paper, please reflect on the following: From your day of ‘observing’ the children’s play and explorations, what are 1-2 ‘take-aways’ or strategies that you might try when setting up your own ‘play’ or ‘activity centers’ in a future classroom?’ –Has your thinking about teaching changed in any way as a result of this ‘field site day?’ Feel free to write as much as you like if some ideas and realizations might be coming to you!
