3. Read the two quotes in the slides for this week, one by Martin Luther King and one by Malcolm X. Which one do you agree with more?
“I think there are plenty of good people in America, but there are also plenty of bad people in America and the bad ones are the ones who seem to have all the power and be in these positions to block things that you and I need. Because this is the situation, you and I have to preserve the right to do what is necessary to bring an end to that situation, and it doesn’t mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time I am not against using violence in self-defense. I don’t even call it violence when it’s self-defense, I call it intelligence.” Malcom X
“Violence as a way of achieving racial justice is both impractical and immoral. I am not unmindful of the fact that violence often brings about momentary results. Nations have frequently won their independence in battle. But in spite of temporary victories, violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problem: it merely creates new and more complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate rather than convert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers. ” MLK

Summary
This week we continue to look further at elements of the Civil Rights Movement. An important voice in the movement was Aretha Franklin who was the daughter of C.L Franklin who was a Baptist pastor. There is a distinctive style of Black Preaching that has its roots in African Culture that played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. The technique known as “whooping” is a celebratory style of black preaching that pastors typically use to close a sermon. It is very energetic and highly motivating. Some church scholars compare it to opera; it’s that moment the sermon segues into song. Though the song “RESPECT” is not a religious song, it has distinctive Gospel elements that Aretha would have leaned growing up. The song became one of the anthems of the CRM.
We also look this week at the life of Malcolm X who went from growing up in a Christian household where he father was a minister killed by the KKK. As he teenager he got involved in a life of petty crime that led to his arrest. While he was in prison he met a member of the Nation of Islam, let by Elijah Muhammad. NOI follows some aspects of Islamic belief, but is an essentially a Black separatist organization. When Malcolm who used X as his last name, made a pilgrimage to Mecca he discovered that Islam was really a universal religion. With this discovery he became disenchanted with NOI and followed more fully the true Islam. He was assassinated in Harlem in 1965. No one has ever been convicted of that crime. Malcolm X’s Autobiography has become a classic. We are reading the final chapter for this week’s unit. Notice how much of a role Islam plays in Malcolm’s outlook. He preferred Islam to Christianity as a path to help Blacks. He helped restore Black Pride and disagreed with Martin Luther King’s strict adherence to non-violence. He did not advocate violence but self-defense. The reading from Peniel Joseph’s biography of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X makes the important point that the two men together worked toward a common goal.
