Early Moral Development & It’s Implications
Objective: To understand how advancements in cognitive development changes the way we interpret information about and make decisions about other people.

For this assignment your task is to think about the innate biases that all humans have and how advances in cognitive development (e.g., as children advance through the Piaget’s stages of cognitive development) impact the way we interpret, behave towards, and make decisions about other people.
1. In your own words, describe what changes in cognition are happening across the sensorimotor and preoperational stages.
2. How might these changes in the way children are able to perceive, interpret, and think about information impact how we interpret and react to other people?
3. Watch this whole video (Links to an external site.) on infant moral development and bias. ***Note that the researchers always switch the type of stuffed animal and the shirt colors in the puppet shows so they can make sure that the infant responses are not just due to color or stuffed animal preference.***
4. Describe one study from the video that provides insight into human automatic biases.
5. What does this video suggest happens to the way children think as they get older? How do you think changes in cognitive development play a role? Provide a clear, specific explanation with examples.
6. What are your thoughts on the findings from this series of studies? How do you think this information is useful to us in understanding how adults behave in everyday life?
