Discussion Board #3 – Questions about Dictators and the Road to the Second World War
When looking at the origins of totalitarianism and the events of the Second World War, we learned many historical lessons on how dictatorships appear and the destruction they can bring on the global scene. By reflecting on this era of the 20th century, for Discussion Board #3, write two (2) posts where you address any of the following three questions or reply to another student. Your two posts may be answering two of the three questions OR one post that answers one of the three questions and then a reply to another student. Therefore, after your initial post answering one of the three questions, you choose what you want for your second required post – answer to another question or reply to a student. Although you may write these posts with your own knowledge, your posts will be more enriching from the material you’ve learned from the online lectures on Stalin, the rise of Hitler and the Nazis and the Road to the Second World War.
Here are the questions you can address:
- As a major question in 20th century history, there is still quite a bit of historical interpretations and views regarding the relationship between the First and Second World War. Do you believe that there were two entirely separate conflicts? Or do you feel they were in fact the same war separated by a twenty year hiatus? Make a compelling, well-constructed post for the argument you choose. You may refer to the ideas presented in the online lecture “Road to the Second World War Part One” or you may formulate your own thoughts.
- Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin will always be infamously remembered as the worst dictators of the 20th So much, that someone could be demonized if he or she is effectively compared with Hitler or Stalin. What do you believe lies behind or explains the evil and tyranny of Hitler and Stalin? Something within their personal upbringing? Were they no different from other dictators of the past but they instead used twentieth century technology to magnify their crimes? Or was it their twisted individual nature or psychosis? Were they true believers to their political ideologies? Or were they just simply monstrous men? Feel free to refer or build on what you learned about these dictators in the online lectures or offer your own comments and views.
- In Topic #5 we learned about the failure of the League of Nation to stop acts of aggression and maintain peace through collective security. From this historical lesson and reflecting upon the power and standings of the United Nations today, do you believe an international peace-keeping organization can still work to maintain peace in the world as envisioned by President Woodrow Wilson during the Paris Peace Conference? Or is it problematic with too many conflicting national interests or lack of enforcement power to stop worldwide conflicts? To what degree do you believe the idea of an international peace-keeping body has failed or what it must learn from the failed League of Nations to become more effective? Offer your well-reasoned thoughts here.
