This Week’s Information Literacy Concept
This week, we will be talking about the ACRL framework concept of Scholarship as Conversation. What does that mean? When you read a scholarly article or book, you are reading just one perspective in an ongoing conversation between researchers, scholars, and professionals in that field about that topic. Those researchers, scholars, and professionals may agree or disagree with one another, but they are constantly building upon the work that came before them.

How can you become involved in the scholarly conversation? The first step is doing research—searching for and reading scholarly sources. As you learn more about the topic, the vocabulary, and the authors who contribute to the conversation, you are becoming involved in the discussion. Read at least a few scholarly articles on the topic and look carefully at the in-text citations and the reference list. Which sources are cited and referenced often? How does the author talk about those sources? Look also for sections in the article like “literature review” or “background;” not all articles have these, but in articles that do, the authors generally provide a short, simplified explanation of the history of the conversation on the topic.

As the video above says, understanding the broader conversation going on around the information source is an important part of understanding the value of an information source. After additional research, Deshawn came to understand that many historians disagreed with the argument put forward in the book that he had used for his research paper (Steely Library NKU, 2018). Does that mean that he cannot use that book at all? No, it does not. However, in order to produce an accurate paper, he must also indicate that the book represents a minority view and include perspectives from historians that disagree. By doing that, not only has Deshawn demonstrated that he understands the concept of scholarship as a conversation but also that he has a broad understanding of the topic.
