CRAAPO Test
CRAAPO Test
This week we will also be learning about the CRAAPO test. It’s a funny name for a very useful way to evaluate sources.
CRAAPO stands for Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose, and Objectivity. It is particularly useful for evaluating non-scholarly sources, like magazine and newspaper articles and websites.
· Currency: How current is the information? How recently was the source created? Does it reflect the most up-to-date information?
· Relevance: How well does this source relate to your topic? Is the source aimed at the appropriate audience (not too young or too advanced)? Is the source an appropriate type of source (a scholarly or popular source, depending on the situation)?
· Authority: Who is the author/publisher/source/sponsor? Is the author an authority on this topic? What are the author’s credentials?
· Accuracy: How accurate and reliable is the information in the source? Is the information supported by evidence? Where does the information come from? Has the source been reviewed for accuracy?
· Purpose: What is the reason that this source was created? Was it created to sell, inform, persuade, entertain, or teach? Is the purpose of the source clear?
· Objectivity: Does the source appear to be objective and impartial? Is the source fact, opinion, or propaganda? Are there political, ideological, cultural, religious, institutional, or personal biases?
By knowing each of these elements, you can evaluate the sources you find and determine how well they fit your research project. For most academic purposes, you want to choose sources that are the most up-to-date, directly related to your topic, written by someone with clear expertise in the field. In addition, the source should contain data from credible sources, and you should be able to clearly see where the evidence came from. You also want to evaluate the purpose of the source—why was it created? If the source was created to sell something or to persuade, then you should think carefully about whether that purpose affects the source’s credibility. Finally, look at the objectivity of the source; do you see any indication of opinion or bias? Has the author presented a full and accurate account of the topic or only one side?
Your determination of whether a source passes the CRAAPO test will depend on your information need. For example, you might need to find a source that reflects a specific political or cultural bias if you are writing about a specific political or cultural group. Or you might need to find an example of an out-of-date perspective on a topic if you are writing about a historical topic. Regardless of the assignment specifics, these guidelines will help you as you evaluate the appropriateness of sources.
