While social work practice makes extensive use of behavioral and social science theory, Weinberg (2016) and Corey, Corey, and Corey (2019) raise questions around the ethics of using deficit-based diagnostic and treatment modalities, which may pathologize clients and diminish the true complexity of their lives and circumstances. On your own, do some brief reflexive writing on the following question: How would you go about getting to know a client during your initial contact?

Your response should consider, but is not limited to the following elements: your own theoretical stance; use of diagnostic and assessment tools (i.e., tests); formulating treatment goals (aka “the contract”); organizational policy and procedures; and external payment/reimbursement requirements.
