Discuss the patriarchal religion and what was absent in their religion
Order Instructions
1. Discuss the patriarchal religion and what was absent in their religion.
Very likely something in this lecture will surprise you about what is absent in the religion of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Hold onto your seat belts.
2. Discuss the general status and role of women in the Hebrew Bible.
Some of you may not like this (and some of you may), but here it is.
3. Describe the basic techniques of archeology and discuss how archeology can help in understanding the Hebrew Bible. (Digs) (Harper Collins, “The Bible and Archaeology” lvii-lxi)
Keep in mind that when a reading is underlined in the revised ageanda, it means that is the title in Canvas. So you read the article “Digs” and also the pages in the Harper Collins, in addition to what I say in the lecture video. Unfortunately, I cannot underline or put things in bold in these Canvas class emails, but the revised agenda in Canvas will guide you.
4. Discuss the formation, scope, and nature of an all-Israelite epic, paying particular attention to the nature and role of oral tradition or storytelling.
This is probably the shortest question to do this time.
5. The “P” story of creation is a mythical poem. Discuss this statement. In your essay compare the “P” version with the “J” version. Note in your comparison the role and image of women presented. Since the Bible readings are in bold, you are to also summarize these Bible readings in your report on this question. Genesis 1:1-2:4a; Genesis 2:4b-24 (Just so you know what this means, Genesis 1:1-2:4a means the book of Genesis chapter 1, versus 1 through Genesis chapter 2, the first part of verse 4. Genesis 2:4b-24 means the book of Genesis, chapter 2, the second half of verse 4 through Genesis chapter 2 verse 24.)
I believe this is our first reading in the Bible and you are in for a treat. You can see on the revised agenda that the Bible reading is in bold (I cannot bold words in these Canvas class emails) which means that you read this in the Bible. I will expect you to give main ideas from the Bible readings, in addition to my lecture. There are many main ideas in this study question. It is our first great exploration of an important and fascinating Bible story. These early stories in Genesis are among my favorite in the Bible. Enjoy
6. In light of the story of human beings and the serpent, give the ancient Hebrew understanding of deity and of sin. Genesis 3.
What’s wrong with the world? Here’s the Bible’s first statement about sin.
