Identify the various constructs and concepts involved in the study.
Volchok (2015) described concepts as observations from specific facts, such common examples of concepts include societal attributes such as age, educational level, income, and number of siblings. The 1998 State Farm case study did not focus on the before mentioned attributes nor did it consider the weather conditions or the population of the area. Instead, concepts such as the geographic location of dangerous intersections, personal injury caused by car accidents, and property damage caused by car accidents were used in the study. Additionally, constructs include monetary values which State Farm paid out to insured motorists. Concepts are observed indirect and direct observation. However, constructs are measured with multiple variables and are more abstract than concepts such as beauty, justice, happiness, or health (Volchok, 2015). In the State Farm case study, the constructs include insurance brand loyalty, safety concerns, and the public perception of the dangerous intersection study (Schnidler, 2022),
What hypothesis might drive the research of one of the cities on the top 10 dangerous intersection list?
Suppose the Texas Department of Transportation applies for and receives the $100,000 grant to offset the cost of installing turn lanes and new traffic signals at the dangerous intersection of State Highway 121 and Preston Road, Frisco, Texas (County, 2001). In that case, the number of reported car accidents for the crossing should decrease.
Evaluate the methodology for State Farm’s research
State Farm used mixed methodology to find solutions for dangerous intersections. Applied Research was used to determine viable solutions for dangerous conditions to help detour future accidents. The case study used Qualitative Marketing Research to determine the ten most dangerous intersections in the United States. The case included Observation Research which could be a mixed methodology. Given that the study recorded the drivers’ behaviors and potential driving conflicts at dangerous intersections (Schnidler, 2022). Qualitatively, the road engineers observed (by sight) drivers’ behaviors and hear the sound drivers’ slamming on the brake or horn blowing to avoid a collision. Quantitively, the study used because drivers were observed breaking rules by committing lane changing without giving proper signaling (Schnidler, 2022).
If you were State Farm, how would you address the concerns of transportation engineers?
State Farm’s foot the bill for the research which determined the most dangerous intersections in the nation. The number one most dangerous intersection nationally was Belt Line Road and Midway Road in Addison, Texas. Based on the observations, the engineers were concerned about the near misses, close calls, and non-life-threatening accidents. By offering grant money to off-set the cost of rerouting and restructuring intersections to make them safer, State Farm’s monetary incentive encourages cities to be proactive and fix the intersections before tragedy strikes (BEWARE, FIX DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS, 1999).
As a leading insurance company State Farm is in unique position to partner with transportation engineers to bring public awareness to the dangerous road intersects. Advertising the grant program and partnership with engineers’ offers the funding an expert advise on how to fix the problem.
If you were State Farm, would you use traffic volume counts as part of the 2003 study?
Retallack & Ostendorf (2020) study revealed existing disagreements of ways to handle traffic congestion to help diminish traffic accidents. Numbers matter, State Farm should include traffic volume. Furthermore, State Farm should offer such data as it can be periodically revisited. Historically, data offers proof of how conditions have improved or worsened over time.
What concerns, other than those expressed by Nepomuceno, do you have?
Neponmuceno was forthright and frank in recognizing the study’s shortcomings. The study did what it was designed for, the focus of State Farm’s first study was to present the problem of dangerous intersections. Which brought immediate awareness of the issue. The insurance company brought to light prevalent issue but did not offer enough funding or solutions to fix the problem. Hindsight, the insurance company should have partnered with the various state government agencies such as department of transportation, public safety, and local engineers throughout the research process. This could have alleviated some of the stress brought about by presenting the road problems without a viable working plan to fix it.
Solutions possibly brought about by traffic studies
State Farm’s study paved the way for sequential road safety research. Since 2001, the advancement of technology has changed the way we communicate, navigate roadways and travel. GPS offer speed warning notifications, road construction, and travel delays. Another feature that has alleviate road congestion are roundabouts or circular intersection with the premise of entering traffic yielding to vehicles on the circulatory roadway. Roundabouts reduce the speed environment which is an added safety feature which also keeps traffic moving (Roundabouts , 2021).
Biblical Worldview
The bible speaks of collaboration as a good thing. According to 1 Peter 4:10, A collaboration brings together the best gifts of individual talents combine into a greater force to serve one another. For to be good stewards of our God given talents glorifies Him (King James Bible, 1769/2017)..
