After reading the course chapter for this week and the article how would you respond to someone who asked you this simple question: "Is crime out of control in America?" It may sound like a simple question but the answer is much more complex given what we know about how we measure crime.

Something that might be fun is to ask your parents (or someone their age, even a non-criminology professor) whether they believe crime is higher or lower today than it was when they were your age. Then compare their response to data shown in the article above.

Be sure to include some application/references to the material from the text AND material from the article.  

Finally, it is difficult to not talk about political figures right now.  Often those debates over personalities are a purposive distraction from the important issues to make them sound simple and easy for people to pick "teams".  I want us to to focus on the issues as they relate to the data, theory, and research findings as opposed to personal political perspectives.  There is little space in your discussion to stray away from making sure you at least answer the question being asked in an informed manner.
