Writing guidelinesTo help you develop strong reading responses, keep the following generalguidelines in mind: when I read any reading response, I look for a clear andcoherent summary and analysis of the assigned reading, both of which should bewell organized, clear, and adhere to the basic requirements. To this end, I usethe following criteria to assess your answers

:Summaryofrequired readings, including key ideas, concepts, and questions to be used as afoundation for the analysis. In your summary, you can demonstrate that you readcarefully and thoroughly. A good summary contains Three Is (Fraser andDavidson 2012): identify an idea or claim in the reading; illustrate the ideawith sufficient evidence from the text; and interpret the idea in light of theevidence. The absence of sufficient textual evidence tends to make summariestoo general, vague, or incomplete. So, make sure your summary offers sufficientdetails from the text to illustrate all the ideas you identify.

Analysiscomparisonand contrast of ideas, concepts, and questions within and between the readings.In your analysis, you demonstrate your ability to fully address or answer thequestions I posed in the prompt. This is where you can demonstrate yourunderstanding of the material and that you are thinking for yourself.Therefore, no external sources can be accepted for the analysis because it mustbe based on your close reading of the required texts.

Coherencethismeans organized, step-by-step, progression of ideas. In other words, ideasshould flow in orderly fashion from sentence to sentence and paragraph toparagraph. Coherence is very important because it helps you to demonstrate thatyou read carefully and fully, and that you can impose order on your thoughtsthus making your claims and arguments easy to follow for the reader.Otherwise, good ideas or claims go to waste because they become disconnected orfragmented and the reader gets lost.

Claritythisrefers to grammar, mechanics, and style. Poorly written sentences make itdifficult for your readers to understand your arguments and thus for you to getyour point across. Poorly written sentences can be awkward, cumbersome ordifficult to read, incomplete, or contain comma splices, for example. They mayalso include improper quoting, or poor balance between paraphrasing andquoting, as well as include commonly confused words.

 Requirementsadhering to basicrequirements, particularly on-time submission, minimum word count, command ofwriting conventions such as in-text citations, and academic honesty.
