Virtue ethical systems: Manager of ICU
In 3-4 paragraphs: Imagine this situation – You are the manager of a hospital or ICU wing. You have been informed that a patient, who is unconscious with a physical ailment, can be cured if they are put onto a specific medication. However, their family says that if you check on their form, they have a religious background that does not endorse modern pharmaceuticals. According to their faith, living or dying is strictly God’s will, and except for prayer, anything else is humans interfering in God’s plan. You check their patient chart and their religious preference is one that often is known to reject modern medication, although the patient never specifically made the request not to be medicated.
As a complicating factor, you also know that the treatment is expensive and the family is poor. Although they don’t want to make it an issue, there is a real chance that the family would not have the money (or insurance) to cover the treatment.
I want to know what you would do, BUT I want you to develop the argument from the angle of “what sort of professional am I trying to be/become”? In other words, start from what kind of person you try to define yourself as, your key personal and professional values, and then from there address the situation at hand
