 CASE VIGNETTE:A Syrian college student was referred for an assessment of hiseligibility for accommodations for attention-deficit/hyperactivitydisorder (ADHD). Suhail had had difficulties with his academic workprior to his arrival in the United States. His struggle with educationhad affected the family dynamics, as it made him more of a target forcriticism by the males in the family, thus pushing his mother to 2 / 3become ever more protective. Suhail, unbeknownst to his family, hadbeen struggling with issue of gender identity and homosexualtendencies. Growing up in a society that would not allow for such alifestyle or the questioning of his identify, Suhail had kept his strugglea secret from the family, leaving them with concerns about the issueof ADHD only.
