Abstract

This is a quarter page summary of the report.  It should give the aims and objectives, your methodology, the pertinent results and conclusions.  You must state the novelty of the your project.

1.0   Introduction

This should include:

        Introduction and background context of the project, the specific problem description, scope, themes, novelty involved, etc.

        Reformulated/Reviewed Aims, Objectives and Hypothesis.

        Plan/Layout of Dissertation

2.0             Literature Review

This should include:

        An updated and complete critical description of the current state of research undertaken by others in the field and/or closely related fields. 

        A description and comparison of the approaches undertaken by others in the field.

        A summary of the gaps in the existing work, the relevance to your aims and objectives and how you intend to address this.

        A review of your hypothesis based on your literature review.

Remember that we are looking at the current state of the research in the field and not a description of basic text book theory. 

3 Research/Design/Process Methods

Based on the results from your Literature Review this should produce the methods you employ for your project:  This may include:

        Technical Aspects (Engineering & Mathematical Science) Involved;

        Process and steps involved of the design process adopted;

        Specific detail involved to create and run Anaytical and  Numerical/Computational Models;

        Experimental Set up and Design (for laboratory and data analysis) projects.

Remember that this is not an exhaustive list and you should discuss this with your project supervisor.  You must ensure that you use the appropriate and accurate technical language.   You must also ensure that you state all reasonable assumptions for your approaches.

2.0   Results, Analysis, Discussion

You should:

        Compose the main results/findings of your work using appropriate figures, diagrams and technical descriptions.  This also includes those findings that are unexplained, unexpected or unusual.

        You should ensure that you evaluate your findings are for validity with theory, science and reference is made to your hypothesis, aims and objectives.

        You must produce a critical discussion of your findings with reference to your aims and objectives.  This includes successes and failures.  The latter is fundamental and allows re-examination of the method you undertook.

        Your validation may lead to improvements and predictions which you should analyse and discuss here.

The presentation, appraisal and discussion of your work and outcomes are key here.  Only refer to theoretical material were necessary.  You should evaluate your work with others in the field but highlight the novelty of your work.  Please note that the marks also include the QUALITY of your submission.  This includes the use of appropriate technical language, quality of figures and tables.

Please note that the manner in which you present and analyse your findings, results, designs, solutions, descriptions, comparisons and arguments take precedent.  You must show sufficient understanding and depth of knowledge.

3.0   Conclusion & Future Recommendations

This should include:

        Clear, accurate and concise statements of your work.

        Make reference to your hypothesis whether this has been supported or not.

        Make reference to your aims and objectives and provide and accurate justification as to whether or not these have been met.

        Discuss how you can improve your current study, such as different method or approach and what these may reveal.

        Discuss what could be done to extend your current study, why and what you may wish to look for.
