• State what experimental design is used and define that type of study.

The experimental design that was used was a prospective, quasi-experimental comparison of cognitive behavioral therapy and a 12 step program.  The diea was for this to take place in a residential treatment facility.

• Summarize the study population, methodology, and findings. Do not simply write the information in the abstract.

The population that was studied was 887 male clients that had substance abuse issues were used from a treatment program inpatient, and 887 male clients that had susbtance abuse issues were also used from an outpatient program.  The clients were followed for one year The outcome was that the clients that were treated with 12 step self help programs had a better outcome and more involvment with their own recovery.  However clients that were treated with the cognitive behavioral therapy  averaged almost twice as many outpatient appiontments after leaving residential treatment.  

• Offer a critique or opinion on the findings or methodology.

One critique that I would have on the methodology is that they did not say if these people stayed clean and sober.  Although people may show up for outpatient appointments and attend weekly NA and AA meetings, they may show up high.

Second Classmate:

Treatment for Italian Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

In this experiment they tested with the REST to see if this would help the children with Apraxia of speech. For the experiment they took two Italian children who had speech apraxia and had them do speech therapy 12 hours a day 2-3 times a week. The children did improve after 4 months, but still struggled with words. They have come to the conclusion that the REST is effective for Italian, but that have not discovered if its effective for English yet. I personally think there should have been more students done in this study to really see whether or not the REST therapy works or not. With such a little number of two it is hard to tell.
