Introduction

I would like for you to think “creatively” for this assignment. Think of Four ways that art and an inanimate object of your own choosing are alike.”

(Definition of an inanimate object: a thing that is not alive, such as a rock, a chair, a book, mountain, car, bicycle, etc.

This assignment fulfills:

• Module Objective 3: You will have determined how to identify the monetary, cultural, intrinsic, and historical valuation of artworks.
• Course Outcome 4: You will have differentiated between time periods and cultures using different methodologies.

Inspiration: 

Artist: Marcel Duchamp. American, b. France, 1887-1968.

Title: Bicycle Wheel

Date: 1913.

Medium: Readymade  (a form of sculpture that Duchamp invented in the second decade of the 20th century. Materials used include a purchased or found stool, bicycle Wheel and parts, fastening devices.) 

With  his “Readymades”,  Marcel Duchamp stretched the boundaries of what could be considered art. He embraced irony, satire and chance to create artworks where language, thought and vision act on one another. His readymades are considered one of the 20th centuries important contributions on artists’ creative processes. His work emphasizes irony, verbal witticism and values the conceptual aspect of art over the aesthetic appeal of art. 

The Assignment

Flip through the first part of your textbook (the introduction) and consider the answers to these questions: Who makes art, What is art? Where is art? and How it is valued, censored, and studied?

Please carefully explain your idea and elaborate (a few sentences will do).

Fully compare the object you have chosen to art.

Refer to concepts, terms, and ideas that we have discussed and clearly state how the object is like the art or how the art is like the object. Refrain from simple statements like: They both have colors.

Next, draw by hand ( also ok to use a software program if you happen to have one) or cut and paste a found  image of the object that you have chosen for this comparison.
Underneath the image that you have attached or drawn by hand, list the four similarities that you have come up with.
I have provided examples below to help you understand how to word your comparisons so that you receive full credit.

1. Bicycles move forward into “new” territories, just as artists attempt to move into new territories when experimenting with new media.
2. Just like the wheel of a bike spins around, so a potter’s wheel spins when creating objects out of clay.
3. As a designer is inspired by colors and lines, bicycles contain lines (spokes) and a variety of colors.
4. As riders depend upon the seat of a bicycle to keep them straight and balanced, so artists depend upon rulers and other tools to keep their work straight and balanced.

Try to come up with original and thoughtful ideas of your own you cannot use those listed above. You must use complete sentences and proper grammar to receive full credit. You may draw lines on your paper to  writeyour sentences, or consider collaging ( gluing down) if you can print out your sentences,  or just type them on a word document and insert a photo of your dawn image, etc, What ever works for you. (You can find a definition of collage in your textbook)

You may need to use your phone camera, a camera, or a scanner to duplicate your hand made image electronically to either put it in a word doc or save and submit as a jpeg.  If you can’t draw, you can cut and paste a picture from the internet but I encourage you to try!  Stick Figures are acceptable! You are not graded on the quality of the drawing!  

• Your image can be drawn and you can hand write the answers on the paper. Take a photo of your paper and save the image as a jpeg and submit it to the link.
• You can also use a photograph of your drawing or a cut and pasted image inserted into a word document and then type your answers underneath the artwork. Save the word document and submit it to the link. 
• The third way you can submit this assignment: when you click open the submittal link, you will see a button for an online “text submittal” text box. You can copy in the written part, then use the attach files button to attach your jpeg photograph.
• If you are worried about straight lines for handwriting, You may draw lines on your paper as a guide, or consider collaging ( gluing down- You can find a definition of collage in your textbook ) printed text. or just type them on a word document and insert a photo of your dawn image, etc, What ever works for you is fine
