Final Researched Essay Overview
Final Researched Essay Overview
Essay overview:
Beginning in Module 5, we will turn our attention fully to the Final Researched Essay project. In this project, you’ll keep developing your critical reading and writing skills. Your project will be research-based extension of a line of thinking in response to our previous Analytical Response prompts, as well as certain discussion post prompts. Focusing in even greater detail on the prompts themselves, you will compose a 5-7 page essay that poses a research question and/or a thesis statement, supports your analysis using good-quality research, highlights disabled experience, and articulates your own voice as a communicator.
Topics will be based on previous prompts with modifications. Choose ONE of the following topics:
A specific way that healthcare settings are not necessarily inclusive or supportive of disabled people (focus on a particular disability)
Relations between disabled and non-disabled people in healthcare settings (can be disabled patients and non-disabled healthcare professionals and/or disabled healthcare professionals and non-disabled colleagues and patients)
Disability in the context of a major crisis (ex. COVID-19 pandemic, AIDS epidemic, etc)
Disability’s intersection with other social issues (ex. gender, race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, etc)
How activists and advocates have addressed the healthcare system
In your essay, you should provide specific examples of problems in practice, not just hypothetical scenarios. Through your research, you will demonstrate the significance of the problem AND propose a practical, inclusive solution.
Sources: At least five good-quality sources should be used. In addition to these, you may use up to two of our course readings.
Citation: Your work must cite all sources used in accordance with APA style. This includes BOTH in-text citations AND a matching references page at the end of the essay. Refer to the Academic Integrity Policy, Links, and Notes for how to do this.
Language and approach: In keeping with the social models we’ve been learning about, the essay should not treat disabled people as sources of inspiration and/or pity. Avoid language that frames your analysis and argument in these emotions. (It’s okay to personally feel those things, but leave them out of the paper.)
Mechanics, style, and grammar: All work in this project must be written for a formal, professional audience. The writing should be clear and reasonably free of the types of errors that can easily confuse readers. As we start the writing process, notes and other resources will be made available to help you avoid these errors. All work should be carefully proofread prior to submission. I highly recommend reading your work out loud to yourself, as this is the easiest way to catch errors. Please use your program or app’s spellcheck feature.
Project components: This project will be completed in multiple scaffolded components. Each of these components is essential to effectively building the essay. These components are:
Draft of essay (2-3 pages + references page), due 8/9
Feedback review during Module 6
Peer review, due 8/15
Peer review review (as in reading your peer reviewer’s comments) during Module 7
Final draft of essay (5-7 pages + references page), due 8/22.
